LIQUID-PISTOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,552, dated March 15, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RUssELL PARKER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in "Weapons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of an improvement in weapons, with the object in view of providing a weapon which may be used to protect a person by the discharge from the weapon of ammonia or other liquid at the will of the operator.

A further object is to provide an ammoniapistol which will bear a close resemblance to a firearm, such as a pistol or a revolver.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved weapon. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section in the plane of the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section in the plane of the line A A of Fig. 2.

The stock or butt of the weapon is denoted by A, and it is provided with a forwardly-extended barrel B. The stock A is extended forwardly a short distance beneath the barrel B, as shown at a, to represent a chamber, the front of the said extension at being provided with an end plate a, having a plurality of suitable circular holes a therethrough. The stock A is further provided with a rearwardly and downwardly extended portion a which forms a suitable grip. or handle for the operator, the material which forms the handle being cut away upon each side of the same for the projection therethrough of the sides of the bulb,ametallic strap being thereby formed for the reception and retention of the said bulb.

The collapsible bulb (J is located within and fitted to the handle or grip portion a of the stock A,which bulb is adapted to form a reservoir for the ammonia or other liquid which it is desired to carry within the weapon. The upper and lower portions of the bulb are adapted to fit snugly between the opposite portions of the strap above described for holdin g the said bulb against lateral displacement within the handle portion of the stock.

The bulb C is provided with a flexible delivery-tube c, which extends from the said bulb 0 through the stock A into the barrel B and is there provided with a suitable discharge-nozzle 0, located near the mouth of the barrel.

The trigger is denoted by D, the finger portion at being extended downwardly through the bottom wall of the chamberA of the butt, the said bottom wall of the chamber serving as a pivot uponfwhich the trigger is rocked. The upper end (1' of the trigger is extended upwardly through an elongated slot b in the bottom wall of the barrel B into the interior of the barrel,where the said trigger is adapted to compress and release the delivery-tube c. The trigger is provided with a shoulder d preferably formed by bending the trigger at a point within the stock A between the retraction-spring and the finger portion d for holding the trigger in its operative position within the weapon, thereby doing away with the necessity of providing a special pivot-pin for the said trigger.

The stock A is preferably provided with a shoulder at opposite the upper end d of the trigger D, between which the delivery-tube c is compressed. The tube 0 is yieldingly held closed or compressed,and the upper end of the trigger is held thereby at the limit of its rearward movement by means of a suitable retraction-spring E, which in the present instance consists of an elastic band of loop form which passes around the trigger D Within the stock A and also around a suitable lug or pin e, secured to the bottom wall of the said stock.

The stockA may be provided with a suitable guard F for protecting the fin ger-piece d of the trigger D.

In operation when it is desired to use the weapon the bulb C is compressed, thereby tending to force the liquid contained therein out through the delivery-tube a. At the same time the finger portion of the trigger may be pulled backward, thereby permitting the escape of the liquid through the tube 0 and out through the nozzle 0 in the form of a small stream or spray. The moment it is desired to stop the operation the bulb C may be released and permitted to again expand into its normal position, and the trigger may also bulb.

This Weapon when. usedv as an ammonia pistol is particularly applicable for use'by cyclists, as the stream or spray ofiaiammonia pressure of the bulb, thereby rendering the pistol an effective Weapon for -.use.-,aga-i-nst dogs or even against.highwaymen,-foot pads;
