ATOMIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,240, dated June 28, 1898. Application filed July 24:, 1897- Serial No. 645,758. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. PRESCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Atomizers, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents a longitudinal cross-sectional view of my improved atomizer, showing the piston-' rod andpiston and the valves in elevation thereon; and Fig. II represents an enlarged central longitudinal section of the nozzle of my said atomizer.
The device consists of an inner piston-cylinder A, each end of which projects beyond 'the end of an outer liquid-chamber B, surlet tube O, communicating with the insideboth of the liquid-chamber and piston-cylinder, whereby the liquid may be introduced from said liquid-chamber into the pistonchamber. The said liquid-inlet is controlled by a suitable valve O, actuated by a spring c, Which bears against the inner end of a plug 0', located in the aperture 0 in the pistoncylinder opposite the valve-seat at the end of the inlet-tube. Intermediate of said valve and the liquid-nozzle is located, in an enlarged portion of the piston-cylinder, asecond valve D, actuated 'bya spring d, bearing against the opposite end of said enlarged portion, in a direction opposite that given by the liquid on being forced out from the device. The nozzle E is formed with a helical outlet 6, which gives the emerging liquid a gyratory motion.
The operation of the device is as follows: The piston-rod and piston being drawn back from a position such as is indicated in the drawings, the external pressure of the atmos phere tightly closes the valve D against the entrance of air into the piston-cylinder. At the same time the air above the inlet-valve is expanded, causing a reduction in the pres sure exerted on the upper side of the valve 0, whereupon the pressure of the air upon the liquid in the chamber forces a portion through the inlet-tube and into the pistonchamber. On moving the piston sharply in the opposite direction the said liquid is expelled past thevalve D, which is opened by the pressure of the air thereby produced in the piston-cylinder and out of the end of the nozzle. The exit of the air and liquid from the helical nozzle causes a comminution of the liquid, the helical path giving the air a greater opportunity to separate the particles, thus performing the function of atomizing the liquid.
By constructing the atomizer in the above manner that is, by leading the inlet-tube on the outside of the liquid-chamber and causing it to communicate with a portion of the piston 4 chamber projecting from the liquidchamberthe valve 0 is also brought outside of the said chamber, whereby it may be easily reached for purposes of repair. It is seen that it is only necessary to remove the plug 0' to immediately reach the said valve and its seat.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means covered by any one of the following claims be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- 1. In an atomizer, the combination ofa 1iq-' uid-chamber, a piston-chamber centrally lo cated within said liquid-chamber and project ing from one end thereof, a suitable piston and piston-rod, a valve-controlled liquid-inlet communicating With said liquid-chamber and the projecting end of said piston-cham-= ber, said projecting end provided With a valve adapted to control atmospheric communication with said piston-chamber and further provided with a suitable atomizing-nozzle, substantially as set forth.
2. In an atomizer, the combination of a liquid-chamber, a piston-chamber centrally located Within and projecting from one end of said liquid-chamber, a suitable piston and piston-rod, a valve controlled liquid -inlet oommunioatingwith said liquid-chamber and the projecting portion of the piston-chamber, said projecting portion provided, with a valve adapted to control atmospheric communication with said piston-chamber, the extremity of the latter provided with a helical atomizing-nozzle, substantially as set forth.
