To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. HEINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans or Receptacles for Fruit, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved can or receptacle for preserved fruits, liquids, &c. and the object of my invention is to provide a suitable receptacle for containing fruits or liquids which may be tightly closed or sealed without the use of lead so1der.- I attain this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of my improved can with the cover attached. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, show ing the cover detached. Fig. 3 is a side View, partly in section, showing a slight modification; and Fig. 4: isa side View, partly in section, of the modification, showing the cover detached.
In the practice of my invention I provide an ordinary sheet-metal receptacle A, and to the upper edge thereof is secured a collar B by means of the annular flange 1) and solderjoint, (shown at a.)
Thecollar or nosing B hasan annular groove 1) formed therein, anda ring b composed of resilient wire, is secured to the central opening formed by the inner edge of the said collar B, thematerial forming the said edge being wrapped around the ring, thus producing a finished outlet, while at the same time a spring I is supplied for maintaining contact withthe can-cover, as will be hereinafter described.
As a means for closing the can a cap or cover 0 is provided. .This cap has an annular rib c projected from its under surface of a contouradapted to register with the groove 17 of the cover B, which, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, is V-shaped in cross-section, and the rib c is normally slightly larger than the groove b,whereby a wedge action is exerted when the parts are assembled. I
To close or seal the receptacle A after 1611- ing the same, the cover 0 is placed upon said receptacleand by a sudden even blow with any suitableinstrument is forced tightly upon it,the rib c of the cover being forced into the groove 12 of the nosing. The said rib being slightly larger than the groove 1) is contracted and exerts a lateral pressure against the sides of the groove 1). This pressure acts to keep the cover 0 in position and prevents any leakage of the contents of the receptacle. In the modified form the'cover O is forced on in the same manner, the sudden blow tending to force the wider portion of the rim (3 through the narrow portion of the groove 19 in the nosing B.
' The rib c is made a little larger than the groove b into which it is forced, so that when the cover is in position the rib 0 will exert a lateral pressure upon the sides of the groove 12 and thus prevent any leakage of the contents of the receptacle, and the particular formation of the rib and groove will tend to keep the cover in position.
To remove the cover in either construction, it is only necessary to strike a few sharp blows with asuitable instrument upon the projecting edge e of the cover 0.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1.v A fruit-can having a collar thereon with a central opening leading 'therethrough and an annular groove therein and a resilient ring secured in the inner edge of said collar, in combination with a cover having an annular rib thereon engaging with the said groove, sub stantially as shown and described.
2. In a can for containing fruits, liquids, &c., the combination of a receptacle having one end open, a circular nosing securely fas tened to the open end of said receptacle, a groove formed in the said nosing, a springwire involved in the interior periphery of the nosing, a cap for suitably covering the open end of the aforesaid receptacle, a rib formed upon the said cover and adapted to engage the aforesaid groove in said nosing, the said cover having an overlapping edge, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a can for containing fruits, liquids, &c., the combination of a receptacle having one end open, a nosing securely fastened 011 the open end of said receptacle, a groove formed in the said nosing, a resilient wire ring secured in the interior periphery of the nosing, a cap for suitably covering the open end of the aforesaid receptacle, having a rib of two witnesses, this 5th day of June, 1897. 25
