IMPROVMENTIN WHEEL-WRIGHTS SPOKE-DRIVING BENGH.
@Ltr Stimuli referat in in there htter tant mit making tart sf tige sami.
To' ALL'wHoM IT MAY CONCERN: y Y
Be it known that I, F. M. LEMMON, of Shelbyville, in the c ounty of Shelby, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Spoke-Driving Bench; 'and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iu the art to-make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a'side view of my invention; and
'Figure 2is an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the different figures indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for driving spokes in Wagon-wheel hubs, and consists in a benchnhaving a hub-clamping device by. which the hub is firmly secured to the bench, and an yadjustable rest for holding the spokes as they are driven, and also a binding device for holding` the spokes down snug in the said rest as hereinafter explained, the whole making a very` simplerand desirable machine for the purpose mentioned.
B in the accompanying drawings is a bench of ordinary construction, having a bolt, D, passing up through its'centre, the lower end of the bolt or rod D being hooked to the iioor, and the upper end, d, 'having a screwthread cut thereon and a nut, H, for clamping the hub A to the bench. C c is an adjustable rest which is adjusted vertically in theend of the bench by nuts IJ above and below the same. G is a hooked rod for holding the spoke a down snug into the rest c, and this rod is operated by .a lever, E, tig. 2, which is pivot'ed to the frame at e, and has a lip, f, which engages with a rack, F, to hold the lever in any position in which it is placed when in use. In driving the spokes the hub is rst secured irmlyon the bench bythe clamping-rod D, and the height of the rest or gauge C is adjusted so as to give the desired set or dish to the wheel; the spoke ais then placed in position for driving, and the rod g G is hooked over the Spoke, and the lever E forced down and engages with the rack F, to hold the spoke securely while being driven. After the spoke has been driven the hub-is turned on the bench so as to bring another mortise opposite to the rest,'and 1:he` ,\'perationA is repeated until the spokes are all set. For accommodating larger wheels the hub-clamping rod Dis placed farther from the rest inthe hole b', g. 1. l By these means the spokes are properly set in the hub in4 a rapid and simple manner.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -isr- I claim the benchB, clamping-rod D, adjustable rest C c,`and holding-rod and "lever G E, all arranged and operating as and'for the purpose herein set forth.
FL M. LEMMON.
