ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. TATUM, OF YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO VVHITALL, TATUM dc CO.,OF SAME PLACE.
JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,322, dated December 6, 1898.
Application filed september 8, 1898. Serial No. 690,471. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. TATUM, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to jars especially adapted for use as milk-jars.
My invention consists in the special matters hereinafter claimed; but I do not desire to limit myself to the precisestructure shown.
My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, which show one embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a' section through the jar neck and cover and fastening. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts 'shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the jar and shows also the section-line 1 1 on which the section Fig. 1 is taken.
In the drawings, A is a jar provided witha suitable flange or lip a, surrounding the neck thereof.
13 is the jar-cover,which is preferably made of springy metal and dome-shaped at 12, although other characters of jar covers or tops may be used.
0 is the neck-clasp of the jar, which neckclasp consists of a springy metallic wire or strip curved to embrace the jar-neck and to an extent greater than a semicircle, in order that the said neck-clasp may he slipped over the said neck and will firmly clasp the same, but will be readily removable therefrom.
D is the cover-clamp, which is hinged to the neck-clasp O at one end, is secured to the jar-cover at or about the middle of the domeshaped portion thereof, upwardly curved at its freeend at d, and provided at its said free end with a latch d, which latch is adapted to engage beneath the lip aof the jar. The cover-clamp D may, however, be otherwise attached to the jar-top, which jar-top, as I have said before, may be otherwise constructed. In the drawings I have shown the coverclamp as curved upward at its free end, in order that the said cover-clamp may bear down strongly upon the cover to hold it firmly in place when the latch of the cover-clamp has been entered beneath the lip a of the jar. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the cover-clamp bears down firmly upon the jar-cover and slightly compresses the dome b, so as to effecta more secure closure.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A jar for containing milk and for other like purposes, comprising a jar-body A provided with a lip a at the neck thereof, a neck-clasp 0 comprising a springy curved member of an extent greater than a semicircle and adapted to clasp the jar-neck below the lip thereof, a cover-clamp D of springy material having an upwardly-curved portion d hinged to the neck-clasp at one end, and a latch d at the other end, combined with adepressible domeshaped jar-cover B secured to the cover-clamp held in place on the jar-mouth by said coverclamp when the latch thereof is engaged with the lip.
