Patented nec. 6, |898.,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN HIPKINS, JR., OF MARTINS FERRY, OHIO.
JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of :Letters Patent No. 615,453, dated 'December e, 1898.
Application flied J une 15, 1898.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN I'IIPKINS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Martins Ferry, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Jars, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in devices for clamping jar-lids in position on the jars and means for preventing the movement of the lid while the fastening device is being applied, thereby avoiding any displacement of the packingring and insuring a tight joint.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows in Serial No. 683,462. (No model.)
to extend over the top of the cap. The bearl ings 6 may be formed in any suitable manner on the under side of the flange 8, as shownin Figs. l and 2. The band or rim 7 of the clamp is provided with inwardly-projecting lugs 9, adapted to engage beads 10, formed in the neck of the jar. These beads or ribs are so arranged as to form spaces through which the lugs can pass, so as to permit their being rotated under the beads.
In order to prevent the cap from movement with the clamp when the latter is rotated to secure the cover in position, fingers 1l are formed on the cap so as to project down into the spaces between the beads and bear against the ends of the beads when the cover is placed in position.
In lieu of a continuous rim or band 7 two or more fingers 7 f may be formed on the flange perspective the upper portion of a jar, the lid, and clamping device arranged one above 'the other. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of said parts in operative position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the clamping device.
The neck of the jar is provided with a shoulder 1, forming a bearing for the packing-ring 2 and the edge of the cup-shaped cover `3. The cover is centered on the shoulder by an upwardlyprojecting rib 4 of a size adapted to fit within the cover when placed in position. The cover 3 is provided on its upper side with two or more inclines or cam-surfaces 5, against Which bearing-blocks 6 on the clamp will bear when the latter is placed in position, as shown in Fig. 2. This clamp consists of a band 7, provided at its upper edge with an inwardly-projecting fiange 8, adapted H and the lugs 9 formed on the lower ends of these fingers, as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim herein as my invention- The combination of a jar provided with a continuous shoulder and with spaced beads arranged around the neck of the jar below the shoulder, a cap or cover provided on its top with inclines or cam-surfaces and having fingers adapted to project down into the spaces between the ribs and a clamp provided with bearing portions adapted to bear on the inclines and having lugs adaptedto engage the beads on the neck, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
