Description

RICHARD H. RYNBL' 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM S. HICKS, OF ySAME PLAGE.
Lettere Patent No. 62,227, dated February 19, 186i' d c Sxlniniley referral: in inloess lfrlets .fitm ant milking jin ef ils sami.
. il i TOfALL WVHQM 1T MAY CONCERN: y
lBeit known that I, `RICHARD H. RYNE, ofNeW York, in the county of .NewY York, and State of NewV York,
have invented certain new and useful improveniens in Pen and Pencil Cases; and I do hereby declare that the ilolloiving is ufull, clear, end ex'aet description thereof, reference being had to the accompnnying drawings, rneking purr of this specilieution, and to the lettere of reference runrked thereon, like letters indicating like parte wherever they oceuxtgA To enablerothers skilled in the art to construct endlose Athe invention, I will proceed 'to describe it.
My invention consists in e `novel manner of constructing 'n combined pen und pencil case, so that it may be adapted forV use either as n desk or pocket pen and pencil.
Figure 1 ie n. longitudinal section of the article closed.
Figure Zie a. view of the same extended, with u portion shown in eecltion; and
Figure 3 is a. vievl of the pencil case, and extension bundle detached from the main enne, and having the extension handle shown in section.
A represents the main oi' outer case, which may be mede of metal, 'hard rubber, or any other suitable material. Within thie cnse is secu-red the pen-holder 0whichis made tubular, to permit the pencil ense to be inserted through it, und toellow the formel to slide over the lutter :is it is vshoved hach und forth, the penholder 'being operatedby' he'elidin-g rifn'g, vinthe usuel-murmure The penciicnse eonsissof nt-ubm; whichA extends the 'whole lengthof the outer ease A, and is 'attached permanently thereto et its lower end, by being:
soldered to :i segmental -ring n, which is scoured to the onse A, es shown in fig. 1. By making this ring, n, to
'occupy but only` one eideoi' the space between the outer ease A und the tube b, an opening is leftfthrough-v which the pen-holder rprotrudes, whenehoved forwalrd, las shown on the upper side' of b, in fig. 1. The tube b has n smaller tube, a, which holds und .curriestheleed ineerted within it', of nearly equal length; and from the side of this inner tube, a, nee-r its upper end, .projects a. pin e, which works in a. longitudinul slot in theupper portion ol" b, und alsojn a, epiml slot iii-tube d, which fits over the upper portion of b, and turns loosely thereon.
Sliding o veigthepencil cese is'the extension handle, which consiste-of un inner tube, f, and nn outer one, B.-
The inner tubef has a. longitudinel slot, es ehowii in iig. 3,' and e. pin, o, is inserted through this slot into the tube d, by which menne the handle is permitted'to slide.iu and out over the pencil case, und ntvthe same time byturning the handle the spirnlly slotted tube d is caused to turn with the handle, 'and thus to screw the pencil in or out. AnV outer shell or tube, B, of rubber or metal, is placed' over the tube 12in order to'covei the slot und give n finish to the handle. ,In order to hold this extension handle in position, ,and guide it when shoved out or in, it is connected to the upper end ofthe outer case'A by 'means of un annular ring, z', as shown in igs. 1 und 2'. In the upper end of the sliding handle B, is :i cavity l, shown in fig. 1, to hold the pencil points, which is cl'osed by an ornamental cap, ic. lWhen desired-for use, the handle B is drawn out, ns'shown in' fig. 2, and when it is'desired to, place it in the pocket, it is shoved in, as shown in g. l. By these means I 'produce open und pencil case 'that is very ornamental, extremely compact, :ind having the pen and pencil both located at the lower Vend: so that they cnn both be'used without 'inverting the holder.
Having time described my invention, what I claim i s,
The coinbned pen und pencil-holder, having pen and `pencil both located at one end', enti having the extension handle B arranged to operaie us shoivn and described.A
' RICHARD H. RYNE.
