BOWL HOLDING DEVICE.

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICTE.
HELENA L. OOTHOUT, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
BOWL-HOLDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersiPatent No. 630,734, dated August 8, 1899.
Application led June 23, 1898.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELENA L. OOTHOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bowl-Holding De# vices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to a certain new andl useful bowl-holder designed for use in kitchens, bakeries, or similar places, which con-- sists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully set forth in the drawings and described and pointed out in the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for holding stationary a bowl or similar article within which cakes, sauces, or ingredients are mixed in order that the hands of the person may be absolutely free, thus enabling the cook, havin g both hands free, doing unaided that which often requires the assistance of anotheras, for instance, the mixing of any compound where ingredients must be added to the mixture while the sameis being stirred, the holder being so arranged that it may be readily adjusted to bowls of varying diameter with Very little delay or trouble to the user thereof.
In order to comprehend the invention, reference must be had to theY accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the holder attached to a table and having a bowl secured or held therein. Fig.V 2 is a similar view of the holder with the bowl removed;
and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line w as, Fig. l. y
In the drawings the letter A is used to indicate anysuitable platform, preferably made of stamped metal. To the reduced end of the platform is connected by a hinged joint a the clamp A', the arms c' of Vwhich are designed to embrace the edge of a table A2. This clamp is securely held in place by the thumb-screw A3, which works through a screw-threaded opening b 'in 'the lower arm of the hinged clamp, the head b' of the thumb-screw bear-'- ing against the under face of the table, Fig. I.
Throughthe enlarged portion of the platform are formed, in the presentinstance, four Serial No. 684,249. (No model.)
radial slots l 2 3 4, within each of which works a set-screw 5, held in place by a nut 6. By. loosening the nut G the set-screw 5 may be adjusted toward or from the center of the platform, so as to decrease or increase the distance of one toward the other in order to permit bowls of varying diameters to be received upon the platform between the set-screws 5. To the upper end of each set-screw is attached the lower end of a spring 7, which at its upper end has connected thereto the clip S. These clips when the bowl is in proper position embrace the edge of the bowl 9, the pressure of the spring connection '7 being suicient to hold the bowl rmly. down upon the Yplatform and prevent its displacement during the operation of mixing the various ingredients therein.
To release the bowl after the mixing of the compound, it is only necessary that the clips be removed from the edge ofthe bowl, when the bowl will be released and free to be :rea moved from the platform. In order to protect the edge of the bowl against possible damage, the clips may be provided with a coating of vulcanized rubber or other suitable material.
After the bowl has been removed the platform A may be thrown over and permitted to lie against the side of the table, so as to be out of the way until required for use again,
or the same may be readily detached from the table by simply releasing the thumb-screw A3.
'lo'prevent any disligurement to the face of the table and to permit free adjustment of the set-screws 5, the free end of the platform is provided` with a depending flange or rib b2, which when the platform is in use rests upon the face of the table and holds the under face of the platform a slight distance away from the table. This prevents the head of the setscrews disflguring the face of the table and at the same time allows of the said screws being readily moved inward and outward after loosening of the nuts 6, which would be prevented in case the head of the set-screws came in contact with the table unless the platform be slightly raised or held upward during the operation of adjusting the parts.
It will be observed vthat by the useof the present holderl the bowl may be held'absolutely station ary during theA operation of luix- IOO ing ingredients therein and the operator have both hands free. Besides securing free use of the hands there is no danger of accidental breakage by the slipping of the bowl out of the hands, as often happens where the bowl is held.
The device may be made of any suitable metal and extreme lightness secured by making the same of aluminium or thin metal.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a bowl-holder, the combination of a clamp adapted to be secured to a table or the like, a platform hinged to said clamp, and adjustable means carried by the said platform for securing a bowl or the like thereon, l.substantially as described.
2. In a bowl-holder, the combination of a zo clamp, a platform hinged thereto, a plurality of radially-adjustable devices thereon between which the base of the bowl rests, and retaining devices adapted to engage the bowl each connected to one of said radially-ad j ustable devices, substantially as described.
3. In a bowl-holder, the combination of a clamp adapted to be secured to a table or the like, a platform hinged to said clamp, a plurality of adjustable devices connected to said platform between which the base of the bowl rests, a plurality of bowl-clips, and a spring connection between each clip and one of said adjustable devices, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 31st day of May, 1898.
