LAURA J. \VOLF, OF COLUMBUS, OllIO.
DIAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,281, dated October 3, 1899.
Application filed December 1, 1898. serial No. 698,005. (N0 odel.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAURA J. \VOLF, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Diapers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of diapers of that class which are adapted to receive fecal and other discharges; and the objects of my invention are to provide a diaper of superior form and construction, to provide an improved form of diaper having a detachable waterproof section, and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplishin the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my device, showing the same in a completely-unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of one of the cover-sections of the device with the waterproof section removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the waterproof section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of a portion of the cover-section shown in Fig. 2, said section being taken across the folds or plaits hereinafter described; and Fig. 5 is a view of the device when folded for use.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ an external or cover sheet of suitable fabric, the same being formed of two united sections 1 and 2. These cover-sections, which are of the substantially triangular form shown, have their wider ends sewed together on a curved line, as indicated principally in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the edges of said sections are preferably bound, as indicated at 3. In forming the cover-section 2 I produce therein, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, two plaits or folds 2, which diverge toward the point or outer end of said section and result in imparting a f ullness to the goods, as indicated.
Upon the inner face of the section 2 I provide a detachable waterproof section or sheet 4, the latter having secured on its under side at desirable intervals buttons 6, which are adapted to engage buttonholes 7, formed in said cover-section 2. The waterproof section 4, which is preferably of the substantially shield shape shown, consists of outer and under side sheets of fabric 8 and 9, the edges of which are united and bound together and between which is retained a sheet of rubber 10. As indicated at 11 in Fig. 3, I may also inolose between the cover-sheets 8 and 9 and adjoining the rubber sheet layers of cheesecloth or other suitable absorbent material.
In shaping my improved diaper for use the cover-section 1 is folded over upon the sections 4 and 2, after which, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, the two lateral corners of the body are brought together and caused to overlap. The points or outer ends of the sections 1 and 2 are then folded over onto the overlapping lateral points, and all of said points are pinned together in the usual manner at 12. In thus folding the sections together it will be observed that the central and waterproof section will be brought into position to receive the fecal and other discharges which may pass through the cover-section 1. Owing to the composition of the said section 4 it is evident that the outer section 2 will be entirely protected from dampness or the results of discharges. For the purpose of washing the section 4 may be readily disconnected from the cover portions, it being desirable to wash said parts separately, inasmuch as the presence of the rubber in the section 4 might not withstand the boiling action to which the remaining parts are liable to be subjected.
It is obvious that the section 4 might be used independently by supporting the same from a waist-belt or otherwise.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The im roved diaper herein described, consisting of the cover-sheet formed of two substantially triangular sections united at their wider ends and one of said sections being pro vided with converging plaits or folds to give fullness thereto, and a waterproof section detachably connected with the inner face of one of said triangular sections and adapted to be confined between the two when they are folded one upon the other, substantially as specified.
LAURA J. W'OLF.
