PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. GANS, OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.

SPECIFICATION forming part ef Letters Patent No. 634,813, dated october 1o, 1899. Application nea November 18,1398. serrano. 696,773. (roman.)
Y To all whom, it -may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN L. Grans, a citizenV of the United States of America, residing at Gonnellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in* Scrubbing and Cleaning Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the laccompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in scrubbing and cleaning brushes. v v
The object of my invention is to provide a brush of this character which can be operated either by the pressure of lwater or compressed air. l
A further object of my invention is to provide a brush of this character which can Vbe used for the scrubbing of floors, decks, pavezo ments, cleansing of windows with Water, as
well as removing dust, dirt, dac., from woodwork, furniture, carpets, clothing, rbc.
A further object of my invention is to pro- Y vide a brush of this character which is adapt- 2 5 ed for either delicate or rough work.
Brieliy described, my invention comprises a circular brush having a series of turbine orv deiiecting plates mounted on the periphery of said brush, a supporting-bracket to pivot-Y ally support the brush, and the operation of the brush by means of water or compressed air coming into contact with the turbine or deflecting plates.
My invention iinally consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts heref inaftermore fully described, and particularly pointed out in the. claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
4o forming apart of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, and in whichv Figure l is a side View of my improved scrubbing and cleaning brush, partly in section, showing operating means therefor. Fig. :2 is a top plan View thereof, a portion of the cover broken away, showing the turbine or deflecting plates in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a 5o side view of the cover, showing the apertures formed therein for the insertion therethrough of the supporting arm or bracket, and a portion of the feed-water or air pipe. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the supporting arm or the handle. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional VView of a portion of the brush, showing the arrangement of the water-passages- Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, l indicates the back of the brush, which is substantially circular in formation, in which the bristles 2 are secured. Connected to the periphery .of the back by any suitable means are a series of turbine or deflecting plates These detiec tin g-plates may be arranged in a curvilineal'manner, las shown, or they may be inclined, and are adapted to have their upper edge abut against the plate 4, which is vsuitably secured to the back of the brush. The plate 4 is of greater diameter than the back 1 to allow the' edge thereof to project over the edge of the back. Secured to the upper face of the plate 4, at the center thereof, by any suitable means, as at 5, is au upwardly-extending interiorly-screwthreaded collar 6, which is adapted to receive the screw 7, havingan enlarged head 8.
9 indicates a supporting arm or-bracket for the brush, having an enlarged free end 10, whichis apertured or countersunk on its upper end, as atA 11. This enlarged portion is adapted to revolubly receive the collar o, which is .held in position by means of the enlarged head S of the screw 4'7, fitting into the Y countersunk portion v11. The opposite end of the bracket 9 is formed integral with the water or air feed pipe 12, which has a suitable nozzle 13 connected thereto to its inner'end, while the opposite end thereof is exteriorly screw-threaded, as at 14, to receive the water or air supply pipe. (Not shown.) Mounted on the feed-pipe-l2 is a valve or regulating cock 15 for regulating the flow of water or air to the turbine or deilecting plates.
Formed' on the periphery of the pipe 12 are 95 a pair of supporting-brackets 16 17 for the purpose of securing therein the handle 18 for the brush by means of the set-screw 19.
2O indicates a cover or casing surrounding the brush to confine the water or air thereto bracket, a feed-pipe nozzle, and a portion of 55 IOO and is apertured, as at 2l, to allow of the insertiony therethrough of the supporting bracket or arm 9, and also apertured, as at 22, to allow of the insertion therethrough of the Water ory air feed pipe l2.
The back of the brush l has arranged therein a series of radial Water-passages 23, terminating with the periphery of said back adjacent the turbine or delecting plates 3. Intersecting said passages is another series of axially-extending passages 24, terminating between the bristles2, whereby water strik ing the tubines is deflected and caused to iiow through the passages to the'bristles.
It will be readily apparent that when the water is forced against the turbine or deiiecting plates the pressure thereof will readily revolve the brush and the bristles willspeedily remove allfdirt or collected foreign matter from the object desired to be'cleaned, and owing to the arrangement of the Water-passages the Water will thoroughly iinpregnate the bristles to assist in the cleaning opera-r tion.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction With-y 'combination of a circular back provided with interior radial water-passages and aXially-eX- tending intersecting waterpassages, bristles secured in said back between the axially-extending passages, a collar centrally mounted on said back, a supporting-arm revolubly connected to said collar, a series of turbines peripherally arranged on the back and adjacent the open ends of the radial passages, and a feed-pipe connected to said supporting-arm and having its discharge end in close proxcircular back with a series of turbines pef ripherally arranged thereon, said back being provided withfinterior radial water-passages andaXially-extending intersecting Water-passages, bristles secured in said back, a supporting-arm revolubly connected to said back, a feed-pipe connected to said arm and having its discharge end in close proximity to said turbines, and a cover inclosing said back and rigidly connected to said supporting-arm, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a scrubbing and cleaning brush, the combination of a circular back carrying the bristles, of a series of turbines peripherally arranged on said back,'a supporting-arm revolubly connected to said back, a feed-pipe connected to said arm and having its discharge end in close proximity to said turbines, a handle connected to said feed-pipe, and a cover inclosing the back and rigidly connected to said supporting-arm, substantially as herein shown and described.
L In a scrubbing-brush, the combination of a circular back provided with interior radial water-passages and axially-extending intersecting water-passages, a series yof turbines connected to said back adjacent to the open ends of the radial passages, a supporting-arm rotatably connectedy to thefback, a feed-pipe connected to said arm, and a circular cover rigidly connected to the supporting-arm and extending below ther circular back and its turbines for inclosing the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN L. GANS.
