SHELF ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FINELLE K. RANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Monroe and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shelf Attachments for Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in adjustable shelf attachments for ladders, designed especially for use in connection with store-service ladders.

The object of my invention is to provide a form of shelf which can readily be attached to or removed from either side bar of a ladder and which can be adjusted in a horizontal position regardless of the angle at which the ladder is placed.

In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a store-ladder with my shelf attached thereto in position for use. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of my invention drawn through the adjusting-screws of the shelf and clamp, the clamp being swung or turned downwardly to bring the screws into the same vertical plane. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the shelf-supporting bracket and a portion of the shelf, showing the bearingflange F; and Fig. 5 is a view of 'the opposing face of the clamp 0, showing the bearingflange G.

Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.

The shelf A is secured to a bracket B, which is pivotally attached to a clamp O by means of an adjusting-screw D and thumb-nut E, the bracket and clamp being provided, re-* spectively, with opposing concentric ringflanges F and G, which cooperate with the setscrew in supporting the bracket and shelf from the clamp. The clamp is provided with a set-screw H, by means of which the same may be secured to the side bar I of a ladder, as shown in the drawings. By means of the clamp O and set-screw H the shelf may be adjusted at any desired height upon the ladder and can be secured at either side thereof, and by means of the screw D and nut E the shelf may be adjusted in a horizontal position regardless of the angle of the ladder or of the clamp which engages it.

It will be observed that in order to secure a horizontal adjustment of the shelf it is necessary that the adjusting pin or screw D should extend laterally from the side of the ladder, the shelf being rotated or adjusted in a plane at right angles to that of the side bars of the ladder.

My invention isespecially adapted to be applied to store-service ladders, for the goods can be placed upon the shelf by the storekeeper, who may then mount the ladder and distribute them to various points on the permanent shelving of the store without returning to the floor, the ladder being movably mounted in supporting tracks or ways. Similarly the goods may be removed from the shelves and placed upon my improved laddershelf, when the shopkeeper may descend to the floor and remove them therefrom. It will be understood that when so used my shelf will be adjusted in an intermediate position convenient of access both from the floor and from the upper portion of the ladder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a shelf, adapted to be secured to the side bar of a ladder; and means for adjusting said shelf in a horizontal position, irrespective of the inclination of the ladder, substantially for the purpose set forth.

2. The combinationwithaclamp adapted to engage a ladder; a shelfsupporting bracket pivotally secured thereon, and adapted to be adjusted on said pivot as an axis, in a plane at right angles to that of the side bars of the ladder; and means for holding the bracket at any desired point of adjustment, substantially for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of a clamp adapted to engage a ladder; a shelf-supporting bracket pivotally secured to said clamp, and adapted to be adjusted on said pivot as an axis, in a plane at right angles to that of the side bars of the ladder; bearing-flanges located respectively on the opposing faces of the clamp and bracket; and means for holding the bracket at any desired point of adjustment, substantially for the purpose set forth.
