JAMES BUDD. OF PITTSFORD, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO Bonn AND? muses Letters Patent No. 64,193, dated April I 30, 1867-.
GATE.
T0 A'L IrWHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, JAMES BUDD, ofPittsford, in: the county of Monroe, and State of NewYork have invented a. new and useful Mode of Opening and Closing Gates or'Doors by means of Double-Action Lever; and I doherehy declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the'aocom panying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents aperspective view of my dou'hle-a-ction' lever gate or door.
Figure 2 represents a cross-sectionof the rollers, and mode of hanging my gate or door.
The niiture of' my invention consists in attaching to any double gate or pair of doors four or more rollers g, either on top or bottom. I also attach a. douhle-action lever, at and a horizontal bar, a, running at right angles with gate or door, for the purpose of opening or shutting the door or gate.
To enable others to make and use myinvention, 1' will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my gate by erecting, a frame of four upright pieces, o o o o, to which a plank, 1 7, is nailed'on top. z'z'is a narrow board of suitable thickneSs nailed on upright pieces 0 0 0 0, leaving a. space between the upper edge of board z'izind top piecep, as seen indrawing. e e e e areoithcrshort or long strips of boards, to which the gate or door is fastened, and on which the gateor dooris'hungQ The upper ends of upright strips e e are united bye short strip of boarghf, on' one side, and on the opposite side the rollers gg are fastened. These,
rollers gg run on the upper edge of board 2' 2', without any cgztra track. The upright pieces e e e e are heldin their places by a piece of board, it h, nailed on board z'z' ir; such a way as to leave space enough for the upright pieces 0 e e e to slide freely to and fro, when the lever a is worked. 0 c is a horizontal bar running at right angles with the door or gate, and high enough to admit of the passage of a load of hay when necessary. Thebox a c also-extends from twelve to fodrte'cii feet out each way from the gate or. door, and passes through the stanchion Z, at which point is the fulcrum. To this horizontal bar 0 e are attached three double-action levers: first, the main lever a, with levers b 6 attached {second and third, thedouble-action levers d df b b are two levers attached to main lever a and to the centre of strips ff, for the purpose of opening the door or gate. When the douhle-action lever (Z is worked, the points or pins g g attach theleverszb b to the stripsff, and which form a. horizontal line with the fulcrum at Z, will move on the line thus formed, and in so daing open or close the gate or door; and for this purpose it is necessary that they should move in this horizontal line. The two extreme ends of bar 0 a pass through the arms r not the upright m m, for the purpose of support, and to keep the same in a horizontal position. At either. end of the bar 0 a is attached a double-action lever, 01, to which the cords n n are hung, for' the purpose of opening or closing the gate or door at will, and that those passing through in carriages may open or close the gate or door without leaving the carriage. is It are narrow strips of boards, which are nailed to upright pieces 0 e e e, for the purpose of preventing the gates or doors from tipping ,up. The centre bar 0 c, with the levers a and 11b, canlbe placed at either side of the door or gate, or under ground, where they can be operated in the same mannerand for the same purpose.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the double-action lever a with the levers bib, double-action levers d (1, horizontal bar 0, strips e e e e and guiding boards 2' and it, also posts m mwitharms 1* r, the whole operating substantially in the manner described and for the purpose set forth.
