Description

JAMES A.-WILLIS, OF CHERRY VALLEY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED MEDICAL COMPOUND.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 64,611, dated May 7, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. WILLIS, of Cherry Valley, Otsego county, New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Medical Compound; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an improved medical or chemical compound for the removing and curing of bony substances in horses, such as ring-bones, spavins, splints, &c.
This compound is composed of the following ingredients, mixed together, and in about the proportions and in the manner below stated: four ounces quicksilver, two ounces nitric acid,
two drams cantharides, and two ounces sulphuric acid.
The above ingredients are mixed together in a stoneware pot, partially immersed in cold water, to serve as a condenser, by first putting in the quicksilver, then the nitric acid, then the-oantharides, andthen the sulphuric acid, in small quantities or amounts at a time, stirring briskly with a wooden paddle to prevent it from boiling over; when, it being nearly cold, add one ounce of sesqui-carbonate of ammonia, pulverized; when, allowing the compound to become cold, it is ready and fit for use, as will be hereinafter explained.
In addition to the above compound, I also produce or make a compound from two ounces of olive-oil, one-half ounce of magnesia alba, and one ounce of aqua ammonia, by mixing the whole together in a porcelain mortar.
In using the compound above described, first cut the hair over the enlargement close to the skin, when apply the compound just described with a small wooden paddle, once at least a day, very thoroughly, spreading it over the enlargement until removed, when it will feel spongy or soft, with a serous fluid oozing through the skin. The compound on the enlargement is then to be cleaned off, when, applying the compound lastly or secondly described, rub it in until all the foreign heat is removed.
, By the application of the first-described compound, the bony substance is dissolved, or, in other words, the earthy salts are separated fromthe gelatine, when, by the second compound, the first is neutralized, and any deteriorating or destructive efiects to the natural bones prevented.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The medical compounds, substantially as and for the purposes described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 22d day of February, 1867.
JAMES A. WILLIS.
