Be it known that I, JESSE H. STICE, residing at Allerton, in the county of Wayneand State of Iowa,have made certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Operating Hay-Stackers or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in apparatus for operating hay-stackers and the like, and particularly for operating that class of stackers having a derrick,and means for hoisting the derrick with a charge of hay for the stack, and the present invention relates particularly to the means for raisingthe derrick; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as
will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the operating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a top plan View thereof. Fig. 4is a horizontal section on about line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail View of the master-wheel provided with removable teeth.
In the use of the ordinary stacker 2. horse is hitched to the hoisting-rope A and is driven out from the stacker B to elevate the derrick G. Then to lower the derrick the horse has to be backed up again to the stacker. This involves much loss of time and labor, and my invention seeks to avoid the objection of the ordinary apparatus by providing means whereby the. horse may move continuously and the derrick will be raised and permitted to properly descend, so the operation can be carried on continuously.
In the construction shown Iemploy a drum D, which isjournaled in aframe E and is provided with a toothed pinion F and a ratchetwheel G, both parts F and G being rigid with the drum-shaft. A friction or brake wheel H is loose on the shaft of the drum, and this wheelH is clutched with the drum-shaft preferably by providing a pawl H on the wheel H, which engages with the ratchet-wheel G of the drum. This brake-wheel 'H is acted on by the brake devices,which are preferably so constructed that they can be set to exert a desired tension on the brake-wheel, and preferably consists of a brake-bar I, which is pivoted at one end I, has a suitable handle I at exert any desired pressure on the frictionwheel. As the friction-wheel is loose on the shaft it is obvious the shaft can be turned in one direction independently of the friction pulley or wheel, but as the latter is clutched to the drum-shaft it follows that the drum shaft can only turn in the other direction with the friction=wheel, which is clutched to the drum-shaft, as before described. By reason of this construction the drum may beoperated to hoist the derrick-frame independently of the friction-wheel or without causing any movement of such wheel, but the frictionwheel and its brake-bar will operate to retard the descent of the derrick-frame, so the descent of the latter will be automatically controlled. By this means after the derrick has been properly elevated it is permitted to return to its initial position under the control of the brake.
To operate the drum, I provide a master- Wheel K, which is toothed and meshed with the pinion F and is operated continuouslyin one direction by the sweep L, as will be understood from the drawings. This masterwheel K is not provided with a continuous series of teeth, but is mutilated or smoothed for an interval at K. By this construction when the master-wheel has been given one revolution it will properly elevate the derrick, and then the smooth portion coming opposite the pinion F the drum will be free to permit the return of the derrick to its initial position by its gravity, such return of the derrick being controlled by the brake devices before described.
It will be noticed that the brake is automatic in its operation when once set and avoids the necessity of an attendant.
The distance to which the derrick of the stacker travels with each revolution of the master-wheel may be regulated by making some of the teeth K of the master-wheel K the dumping attitude, so that theoperator on the stack can fork off as much of the charge as may be desired or necessary. p

The combination in an apparatus substantially as described of the drum having a pinion, brake mechanism by which to retard the movement of the drum in one direction, and the master-gear adapted to turn the drum in the opposite direction, said gear meshing with the drum-pinion and being mutilated or having a smooth portion and havingfremov- J able teeth whereby the extent of mutilation or smooth surface maybe varied substantially as setforth. v 1
