Letters Patent No. 65,330, dated June 4, 1867.
IMPRovED MOP-Welness.
To ALL wHoM 1T MAY ooNcnnN;
Be it known that I, O. C. BARNES, of Stowe, in the county of Lamoille, and State of' Vermont, have invented a new and useful improvement in Mop-Wringer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use thev same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this` specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of my improved box mop press or wringer.
Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section taken in the line :i: x, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
'lhis invention relates to an improvement in the construction of a mop-wrlnger or press, and consists in a rectangular box, nearly or quite square, to serve as a vessel for holding water, instead of a pail, which box is pivoted with a lever treadle, that moves a follower placed on a perforated platform or rack in the upper part of the box in such a manner that it shall press upon and squeeze the water out of a inop, as hereinafter described.
A represents the-b'ox for containing water to wash a floor, and on either side of the boit are levers B B,
. about twenty. inches long, and each pivot-ed at one end to a cross-bar, a, at the bottom of the box, and connected at their opposite ends with atrcadle-bar, b. The levers B B are connected at one end, by upright rods' c c, with a cross-bar, C, at the top of thc box, and alsol at their opposite ends, by side rods d d, with the ends of the same cross-bar C in such manner that by raising and lowering the treadle l the bar C shall 4move back and forth, and thus give reciprocating motion to a follower, D, connected with it by arms e e. The follower D has a head-block, g, pivoted on it to give it a rolling movement, for the purpose of adaptation to the mop. A rack or perforated platform, E, is fastened across the inside of the box, about four and a half inches below the top, to support the follower, and keep the mop out of the water when pressing it.` By lifting the treadle-bar b with the end of the foot, the follower D will be thrown out far enough to place the mop between it and the side of the box, to be squeezed comparatively dry by depressing the treadle with the foot. In this manner the most disagreeable part of a womans work in scrubbing doors is avoided, as, instead of wringing the mop with her hands, as usual, she can stand erect and do it more effectually by a natural downward pressure on the treadle with her foot.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The follower D, with the jointed head-blockg, in combination with the treadle-bar L, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein specied.
O. C. BARNES.
