SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,247, dated December 4, 1900.

To all whom it may concern:

V Beit known that I, HERBERT M. STURGIS, of Kansas City, Jackson county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

This invention relates to brushes; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

Figure 1 is a view of my improved brush, showing the manner in which the means for conveying water are secured to the brushblock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the arrangement of the spraying apparatus. Figs. 3 and Ltare views showing the spraying-cup and the tubes carried thereby. Fig. 5 is a view showing the tubular connection detached from the brush-block.

In the construction of this invention I provide a brush-block 1 of any preferred construction, the said brush-block being provided with an aperture 0f any desired dimensions` through the center thereof. Secured upon the upper surface of the said brush-block is a casting 2, the said cast-ing being provided through its center with an enlarged aperture, the sa me registerin g with the aperture through the brush-block, and through the said casting at suitable intervals are other apertures 3, the purpose of which is hereinafter explained.

4 indicates the spraying-cup, the same being inclosed within the aperture in the brushblock, and projecting a suitable distance below the said brush-block and leading from the said cup is a pair of tubes 5, one projecting toward each end of the brush-block. The said tubes are provided on their sides with apertures 6, there being a similar aperture 7 in the outer end of each of said tubes, the purpose of said apertures being to spray the water through splints or bristles carried by the brush-block. The sides of the cupe are also provided with apertures 8, the purpose of which is to deflect the water through the splints or bristles not affected by the water from the tubes 5. ment with the under surface of the brushblock is a secondary bottom 9, through which are suitable apertures 10,the purpose of which is to allow the desired amount of water to pass into the spraying-tubes 5.

11 denotes a rod or bolt passing through apertures in the bottom of the cup 4E and through the secondary bottom 9, the said bolt projecting upwardly thro ugh the vertical portion of a tubular casting 12, and upon the upper end of the said bolt is threaded a finger-nut 13, by means of which the sprayingcup and the tubular casting 12 are held in the desired adjustment. The' said tubular casting is provided with an annular flange 14 near its lower extremity, the said flange resting upon the casting 2, and integral with the said iiange is a lug 15, the same being adapted to project into the apertures 3, whereby the said tubular casting may be more rigidly held in position. Leading'from the upper extremity of the casting 12 is a tubular projection 16, the purposeof 4which is to connect the device to a-hose or other means for conveying water. Dierent adjustments of the casting 12 16 are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, it only being necessary to remove the nut 13 to allow the lug 15 to be placed in another one of the apertures 3 whenever it is desired to place the casting in any of the adjustments shown.

I claim- 1. A device of the class described, comprising abrush-block, a spraying-cup carried in an aperture in said brush-block, a tubular casting carried by said brush-block, means for holding the cup and casting in position on said brush-block, and means for adjusting said casting at different angles on said brush-block, substantially as specified.

2. A device of the class described, comprising an apertured brush-block, a casting carried upon said brush-block, a tubular casting mounted over said casting, means for adjusting said tubular casting at dierent angles, and a spraying-cup carried within the aperture in said brushblock, substantially as specified.

3. In a brush, an apertured brush-block, a
