ROBERT P. \VETMORE, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NORMAN M. VAUGHAN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND TOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,720, dated January 29, 1901. Application filed April 28,1900. Serial Ila-14,692. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- or flange c, which extends over the top edge Be it known that 1, ROBERT P. WETMORE,a of the rear side of the box, as seen best in citizen of the United States, residing at Wash- Fig. 2, to be engaged by the under side of the ington, in the District of Columbia, have inlid as the latter is closed down. This spring 55 vented certain new and useful Improvements serves to throw open the lid when the latter in a Combined Match-Box and Tool-Holder; is disengaged from the spring-catch at the and I do hereby declare the following to be a front of the box. This spring-catch D may full, clear, and exact description of the invenbe of any of the well-known forms and is detion, such as will enable others skilled in the signed to be disengaged by pressure on the 60 TO art to which it appertains to make and use the push-button E in the usual manner.
same. At one end the box is formed or provided This invention is a combined match-box with a thickened portion F, having a longiand tool-holder. tudinally-disposed substantially T-shaped It has for its object, among others, to prosocket or groove G, adapted to receive the 65 vide a pocket match-box which shall serve, correspondingly-shaped head [-1 on the end of further, as a holder for a tool-such, for inthe shank I of a corkscrew or other implestance, asaoorkscrew-which is so held withment, as seen best in Figs. 3 and 6, in the in the box when not in use as to be prevented former of which the implement is shown in from being moved about or rattling and which position with its head engaged in the socket 7o may be easily removed from the box and inin dotted lines, while in Fig. 6 it is shown as serted in a groove in the end of the box projust about to be entered therein. When not vided to receive and hold the same rigidly. in use, the corkscrew or other implement is The invention is clearly illustrated in the held firmly within the box, being there held accompanying drawings, which, with the letby its head engaging beneath a lug K, se- 75 ters of reference marked thereon, form a part cured to the inner wall of the end of the box, of this specification, and in which 7 with entrance upon the under side, as seen Figure l is a perspective View of my imclearly in Fig. 3. To insert the implement, proved pocket match-box closed. Fig. 2 is a it is turned in substantially a vertical posiplan view of the same with the lid thrown tion till the lug or flange upon one side of the 80 back and the corkscrew shown in operative head is engaged in the socket formed by said position by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a longitu lug, and then by pressing the implement dinal sect-ion through the box on the line 3 3 down into its horizontal position the same of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on will be firmly held against displacement, to the line 4 4 of said Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perbe disengaged only by bringingit into its ver- 85 spective view of the cutter and perforator retic-a1 position again. This lug is notched at moved, with the knob and spring left off. its lower edge, so that the side walls of the Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of one end of notch will prevent sidewise movement of the the box, showing the means for holding the head of the implement. implement, the latter being shown as about At the end of the box opposite the enlarge- 0 to be engaged therein. Fig. 6 is a sectional ment F there is an extension L, having the detail. partition M, through an opening in which Like letters of reference indicate like parts works the pin N, one end of which is pointed throughout the several views. or sharpened, as seen in Figs. 2 and 5, while Referring now to the details of the drawits other end is screw-threaded or otherwise 95 5 ings by letter, A designates the box proper, adapted to receive a knob or handle 0, by
and B the lid. This lid is hinged in anysuitwhich it may be manipulated, and between able manner, as by hinges a, to the top edge this knob or handle and the partition M is a of the rear side of the box, and a spring 0 is spring P, which serves to normally keep the provided, which is secured at one end, as at pin in its outermost posit-ion, but which is 10c. b, to the inner face of the rear side of the compressed as the pin is pushed in, and when box, and its free end is bent to form the lug pressure is removed it returns the parts to their normal position. This pin carries the cutter Q, which, as shown, is designed to reciprocate in the chamber of the extension, being guided by the side walls thereof, and
its acting edges are sharpened, as seen best in Fig. 5. The top or bottom wall, or both,
of the extension is provided with opening R forthe introduction of the end of the cigar, which is then cut by pushing inward the push-pin, as will be readily understood. When it is desired to perforate the end of a cigar, the end is placed in the open end of the chamber of the extension and the pin pushed inward, entering the end. of the cigar and perforating it in a manner well understood in the art.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that I have produced a simple and cheap, yet efficient and convenient, pocket matchbox, cigarcutterand perforator, and handy implement-holder; but while the structural embodiment of the invention herein illustrated is What I at the present time consider preferable it is evident that changes and variations may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and I therefore do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details of construction herein illustrated.
What I claim as new is 1. A match-box having at one end an enlargement with a socket to receive the head of the shank of an implement, and upon the interior of the box means to detachably hold the head of such implement, as set forth.
2. A pocket match-box having upon its interior wall a lug forming a socket between itself and the wall of the box with an entrance to said socket from the under side of the lug, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature Witnesses:
