SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,989, dated May 28, 1901. Application filed August 31, 1900. Serial No. 28,657. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST N. RITZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paste-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to receptacles for containing prepared paste and analogous adhesive material; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the said receptacle entirely uncovered. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view, on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, of one form of my said receptacle with its closures complete. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away or in section and with the inner closures removed. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating another form of my present invention.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the receptacle for paste, cream mucilage, or analogous material, and said receptacle is preferably made of glass or analogous material, although this is not essential.

B represents an inner wall or partition, preferably formed integrally therewith, said partition in the preferred form herein illustrated having its upper edge on a plane below that of the top of the part A for the reception of a pasteboard or other closure G, which rests on the part B and is entirely within the part i A, and D is a similar closure, of like material, but of slightly-greater diameter, which rests upon the upper surface of the closure 0 and the top surface of the part A.

The receptacle A is provided with an annular flange E, encircling its upper part and preferably formed integrally therewith, and in the form of my invention illustrated in the first three figures of the drawings the flange E is formed with an outwardly inclined edge. Above the flange E, and preferably integral therewith, is another flange F, of less diameter, and which may be similarly inclined, if

Above the flange F the receptacle A is of substantially the same external diame* ter as it is below the flange E except that the said upper exterior portion is formed with a screw-thread a or analogous fastening devices for engagement with corresponding devices I) on the inner cap G, which latter may be eonveniently formed of sheet metal.

H represents a flexible gasket or packingring, preferably of india-rubber or analogous material, which rests on the flange E and bears against the flange F, as shown. This ring may be of different height and width in cross-section and may when used in connection with the form of receptacle shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 be arranged with its greater thickness in an upright direction or when used in connection with the form of receptacle shown in Fig. A with its greater thickness in a horizontal plane, as shown in the drawings.

I represents the outer cap of my device and may be spun out of sheet metal, with its lower edge flaring or inclined outwardly, as shown at c, to thereby insure a better frictional hold of the outer cap I on the receptacle A, although other material than metal may be employed for said cap if desired in any instance, and the described flare of the lower edge of the cap is not essential in all instances.

The space within the receptacle A between its inner wall and the outer wallof the partition B is designed to be filled with prepared paste, cream-mucilage, or other adhesive substance, from which air is excluded by the described pasteboard or other closure 0, which also covers the smaller receptacle formed by said partition B and in this filled condition, with the other closure D, gasket H, and caps G and I in place, as shown best in Fig. 2, the device is ready for the market, ,(it being understood that the same is intended to be sold with a brush,as is comm on with paste and m ucilage packages,) and in this sealed condition the contents of the receptacle will keep moist and ready for use for an indefinite time. When the article is to be used, the outer cap I is slipped off and the inner cap G and 010- sures D G removed to obtain access to the paste or other adhesive substance, after which the brush may be kept in the described smaller receptacle, and if the handle of the brush projects above the plane of the top of the part A this is immaterial, as the outer cap I is made of sufiicient height to accommodate the thus upward-projecting portion of the brushhandle, while air is excluded by reason of the impingement of the lower edge of the said outer cap I against the described gasket H. Hence I have provided a securely-sealed and convenient receptacle, which can be instantly adapted for readyuse and thereafter subsequently sealed against the entrance of air by the described outer cap with sufficient closeness for all practical purposes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A receptacle for paste or analogous adhesive material, comprising a suitable vessel provided with an upper annular exterior flange; an inner sealing-cap removably and replaceably secured to the top of said vessel, above said flange; and an outer sealing-cap surrounding said inner sealing-cap, free from contact therewith, and in engagement with said flange.

2. In a receptacle for paste or analogous adhesive material, the combination with a suitable vessel provided with an upper annular exterior flange, and having an interior partition formed integrally with the wall of said vessel, and rising from the bottom of the same, but terminating on a plane below that of the top of said vessel; of a sealing-closure, resting on top of said partition within said vessel; an inner sealing-cap resting on and surrounding the upper part of said vessel; and an outer sealing-cap surrounding said inner sealing-cap, free from contact therewith, and in engagement with said flange.

3. In a receptacle for paste or analogous adhesive material, the combination with a suitable vessel provided with an upper annular exterior flange, and having an interior partition formed integrally with the wall of said vessel; of an inner sealing-cap resting on and surrounding the upper part of said vessel; a

flexible gasket surrounding said vessel and resting on said flange; and an outer sealingcap, surrounding said inner sealing-cap, free from contact therewith and in engagement with said flange and the flexible gasket resting thereon.
