No. 679,993. Patented Aug. 6, 190]. J. 9. R088 81. H. M, TAGGART. ADJUSTABLE 'ADHESIVE SUPPORTING PLASTER 0R BANDAGE.
(Application filed May 11, 1901.)
(No Model.)
NITE TATES .ATEENT FF 1C JOHN G. ROSS-AND HOWARD M. TAGGART, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
.ADJUSTABLE ADHESIVE SUPPORTING PL ASTER R BANDAGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 679,993, dated August 6, 1901.
' Application filed May11,1901. Seria1No.59,774. (No specimens.)
- T0 at whom it mwy ooncern:
Be it known that we, JOHN G. Ross and HOWARD M. TAGGART, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Adh esive Supporting Plasters or Bandages, of which the following is a specification. a
Our invention has relation to an adjustable adhesive plaster or bandage designed to support or fixcertain muscular parts of the body during medical treatment, and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of the parts constituting the plaster or bandage.
The principal objects of our invention are, first, to provide an adhesive plaster or bandage of simple construction designed when appropriateiy placed upon the body to sup- "description, taken in connection withthe acrecess or slot 0?. adhesive faces b b and are joined together at companying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a plasterer bandage embodying main features of our invention. Fig.2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line a; a; of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a a represent the two sections of the plaster or'bandage separated in the preferred form by an oblong The two sections a a have contiguous sides by straps d, of non-adhesive material, which is also preferably inelastic. The sections a a, are also connected by straps or bands e, of suitable elastic material, which span the opening or recess a and engage buckles or other fastenings f, connected with one section, the straps or bands 2 being connected with the other section, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The opening or recess a in the non-adhesive portion of the bandage or plaster permits of ready inspec tion .or treatment of parts between the supported parts of the body without removing the plaster or bandage.
' In use the adhesive faces b b are placed upon the parts of the body to be supported or fixed and the flexible straps or hands e tightened to bring the sections a a of the plaster or bandage. toward each other, and consequently to bring the supported parts of the body toward each other. This adjustment of the sections a a is readily gaged by the non-adhesive inelastic straps d, which as the sections a approach each other more and more will bu'lgeupward to indicate the movement of the sections a, and the consequent movement of those parts of the body to'which the faces b of the plaster or bandage adhere. The elastic straps e exert a constant tension'upon the parts of the body and yet yield sufliciently to extraordinary displacement of the parts to flexibly yet firmly support or fix those parts. The plaster or bandagesections may readily be slackened or withdrawn from each other by unloosening the straps e, and hence the plaster or bandage can readily be drawn together, tighten ed, slackened or otherwise adjusted by a ready manipulation of the flexible straps 9, while the plaster or bandage adheres to the body and without disconnecting 0r unloos'ening the adhesive faces I) from the parts to which they adhere.
Our plaster or bandage will befound efficacious when used for any of the following purposes, viz: for the treatment of pleurisy,
lumbago, sprains, weak backs, or dislocated or fractured ribs, collar-bones, and the like,
Having thus described the nature. and objects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adhesive supporting-plaster or bandage, comprising two or more sections, each having an adhesive face, thecontiguous edges of adjaceut'sections being conne'ctedby nonadhesive inelastic material, and adjustable elastic connections between the adjacent sections'adapted to tighten or slacken the sections toward or away from each other when said sect-ions adhere to the parts to be supported. v I
2. An adhesive supporting plaster or bandage, comprising two or more sectidns, each having an adhesive face, non-elastic and nonadhesive straps connecting the contiguous edges of adjacent sections together, and elastic take-up straps also connecting said edges, said elastic straps comprising means for adjusting the sections toward or away from each other, while adhering to the parts to be supported, and said non-elastic and non-ad- 1'5 hesive straps constituting means for gaging the movement of the sections and supported parts toward or away from each other.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our signatures in the presence of two subscribing 20 witnesses.- V
