DRAIN.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,548, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed May 8, 1901l Serial No; 59,249; (No model.)
To all 'whom t may concern,.-
Be it kn own that I, J AMEs FREDERIC STK-Es, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Palma Sola, in the county of Manatee and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Drain, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices fordrainage and irrigation; and the object is to provide a drain so arranged as to exclude silt or oil, whereby the water may have an uninterrupted ilow through the drain.
I will describe a drain embodying my'invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isa longitudinal section of a drain embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the drain.
The drain comprises a pipe l of any suitable material, which is continuous or jointless. This drain is open at the bottom and rests upon a filter materialQ, consisting of any suitable material-such,forinstance,as loose. gravel, shells, or the like.
The drain-pipe is 1 of course located below the surface of the ground, and Vextended. from the drain at intervals above the surface of the ground are air-pipes 3, designed to permit the entrance of air to facilitate the ow of water and to introduce air to the lower soil.
In operation the drain being seamless or jointless and open at the bottom, the water must pass up through the filter material and then rise into the chamber or pipe to escape, so that the silt by reason of gravity cannot follow, even if passing the filter material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An open-bottom continuous drain-pipe, and a bed of filter material on which tho pipe rests, substantially as specified.
2. An open-bottom continuous drain-pipe, a bed of ltermaterial on which the pipe rests, and air-tubes leading upward from the drain, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. JAMES FREDERIC vSIKES'.
