and useful Improvements in Sectional Bookcases, of which the following is a specification. The present invention is in the nature of some specific improvements in the lines of the invention shown and claimed in my application forsectional bookcases, Serial No. 45,290, filed January 30, 1901.

The improvements consist, essentially, in a novel and useful equalizing device for preventing the sliding door from binding and in certain other novel features of construction, all of which Will be hereinafter fully described, and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a case provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the door partially pulled out of the case. Fig. 3 is a front view of the. case with the door removed. 1

A represents the bottom,'B the back, and O the sides or ends, of the case. In practice severalcases of this kind are placed one on top of the other and are provided with removable top and base sections, all of which interlock with one another.

D represents an adjustable supporting device for the bottom of the case,and which consists of a rod having one end secured to the central portion of the bottom adjacent to its front edge, the other or rear end of the rod being adjustably secured in the upper portion of the back of the case by means of a nut D, the said rear end of the rod being for that purpose provided with screw threads D The front end of the rod is preferably provided with an enlarged portion or head D which engages the under side of the bottom of the case. It-will be seen that this supporting-rod prevents the central portion of the shelf or bottom of the case from sagging when books or other objects are placed upon same and makes the case more rigid. While I have shown the rod provided with anut at one end for the purpose of adjusting or tightening the rod, it is evident that same may be adjusted by some other means.

E represents adoor, which is pivotally mounted in the front portion of the case by means of a, hook E, which engages stops F.

When brought to a horizontal position, thisdoor slides into the case upon rails G, secured to the sides or ends of the case. These rails are provided with felt cushions G on their upper or supporting edges, and which cushions cause the door to slide into the case noiselessly.

H represents an equalizer for the door, comprising two levers or arms which cross each other. One of these arms has a slot H at its center, and which slot is adapted to receive and form a bearing for a stud or button H which is permanently-secured to the other arm, the above slot being slightly curved, so as to conform with the path taken by the said pin H when the arms close or open. The forward end portions of the arms have reduced inwardly-curved portions, which are slidably mounted in eyelets I, secured on the door E,

the rear ends of the arms being pivotally connected to the back of the case bymeans of hooks or stationary pivots J, which engage holes or openings in the said ends of the arms.

The operation of the equalizer is as follows: When the arms close, the forward end portion of same slides outwardly in the eyelets or bearings provided therefor, the pin moving in the guide channel or slot 11', causinga perfect uniform movement of the arms. The door,which is attached thereto,will thus move steadily in a straight path in and out of the case without binding. I
