SECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 690,940, dated January 14, 1902.

Be it known that I, HENRY B. FEBIGEP., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and count-y of Philadelphiatate of Penn syivania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in golf-clubs 5 and it consists in providing means whereby an additional impact or blow is delivered to the ball when the club strikes and follows the same.

It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the head of a golf-club, and B the shaft thereof, which is attached to said head in any suitable and well-known manner, said head having the striking-face C, which may be provided with any suitable face--such as leather, metal, or any 'composition material, if desired-and the base of said head may be provided with a plate D, if desired, it being un@ derstood that I do not desire to limit myself to any particular construction of club, since my invention is applicable to any form of golf-club, whether a driver, brassy, or iron, in the head of each of which I place means for imparting an additional impact or blow to the ball as the same is struck and followed, and in carrying out my invention I insert in the head of the club a freely-movable weight, which may be lead, Quicksilver, shot, In the drawings I have shown two slots E and F, which are made by boring the same in the head and then partly iilling the slots with a suitable weight G, which, as above stated, may be of any suitable material, and have then closed the slots by`a plug I-I or any other closing device, it being seen that as the weights but partly ll the slots the same are movable therein, so that when the clubis swung back and then forward to hit the ball the weight Serial No. 77.754. or weights will be caused to strike the wall of the slot toward the striking-face, and an additional impact or blow is imparted to the ball upon contact and follow through, whereby with the same power exerted the ball is caused to travel a greater distance than if the m ovable weight were not used.

It will be evident that in lieu of forming the slots as shown a single slot or more than two may be employed, or I may insert the weight in a tube and then place the tube, with the weight therein, in the head of the club with the same result.

It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.

Having thus described my invention, what I believe as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a golf-club, a head, and a weight adapted to be carried in said head and n10v able therein at an angle to the striking-face of said head.

2. In a golf-club a shaft, a head, a slot therein extending laterally with respect to n said shaft, and :i weight freely movable in said slot 3. In a golf-club, a shaft, a headV thereon, a weight freely movable transversely within said head, and means for retaining said weight therein.

4.. In a golf-club, a head, a shaft and a weight freely movable transversely in said head toward and away from the striking-face of said head, whereby an additional blow is imparted to the ball when struck.

,In a golf-club, a head, a shaft, a slot in said head, and a weight in said slot adapted to move transversely in said slot toward and away from the striking-face of said head, whereby when the ball is struck the weight 9 contacts with the wall of the slot adj acentthe said striking-face so that an additional blow may be imparted to the ball on impact with the head. v

6. In a golf-club, a head, a shaft, a slot in 1 said head extending at substantially a right angle from the striking-face of said head and a weight carried in said slot adapted to freely move in said slot.

7. In a golf-club, a head, a shaft, and a Weight carried in said head adapted to freely move in said head in a line substantially at right angles to the striking-face of said head.

8. In a golf-club, ahead, and a Weight carried thereby and movable relative to said head in a plane which is a continuation of the plane of movement; of said head.

9. In a golf-club, a shaft, a' head, and a Weight carried by said head and freely movable therein in a plane substantiallyl at right angles to the axial line of said shaft.

10. In a golf-club, a shaf, a head therefor, 15 and a weight; freely movable therein in a plane transverse to thel axis of the shaft.

11. A golf-club head having a Weight movable transversely to the striking-face of said head.
