UNimnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK D. BENTLEY, OF SANBORN, NORTH DAKOTA,
FLY-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 692,501, dated February 4, 1902.
Application led May 2l, 1901. Serial N0. 61,247. (No model .l
To @ZZ whom, t mfr/y conc-erro:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. BENTLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, (but having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States,) residing at Sanborn, in the county of Barnes and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Fly- Screen, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flyscreens adapted particularly for use with cradles, childrens beds, carriages, and the like, but also capable ot any other application where found practicable; and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective folding means for supporting and positively holding a 'ly net or screen in applied position, the said means being reducible to compact form for storage when not in use and capable of being quickly setup in operative position.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cradle, showing the improved device applied in operative position thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the improved device without the net. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the members of the improved device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
lhe numeral l designates oppositely-disposed side plates having a plurality of longitudinally-ahmed apertures 2 therein, which movably receive the terminals of a series of wire bows 3, the terminals of said bows fitting with such frictional tightness in the apertures 2 as to permit them to be adjusted at ang.T angle and retain the position in which they are set. The central upper portionsr of the plates 1 are formed with apertures 4:, one in each, and therein are removably sprung the inturned angular ends 5 of a bowed holder 5, which is of materially greater dimensions than the bows 3 and at the center of its bend is formed with a grasping-loop 7. The distance between the extremities of the holder where the bends 5 are located and the apertures 4 reckoned from the outer sides of the plates 1 is less than the said angular ends have to be sprung outwardly in order to insert them in the said apertures, aud by this means the holder is held intact with the plates 1, but is at all times free for swinging movement. The netting or screen S is secured to the one end bow 3 and is drawn loosely over the other bows 3 after the latter have been set at the angle desired. The said netting or screen falls over the outer sides of the plates 1 and is held down by applying` the ends ot' the holder 6 to the plates to thus fasten said netting or screen, and in this condition the entire device is placed in the cradle, carriage, or other position desired and the holder drawn down horizontally to secure the foot portion of the netting or screen, as clearly shown by Fig. 1. In some instances the plates 1 may be permanently fastened in place; but ordinarily they will be rested on the sides of the bedding or other portion of the device in which the screen is positioned.
By the use of the improved device the screen will be held clear ot the child, which it protects, and at any time desired the holder may be raised and the foot portion of the screen or netting thrown upward to thus provide an opening for removing the child from under the same. When the device is prepared for storage, when use of the same is no longer desired, or in seasons when its use is unnecessary, the holder is detached, the bows 3 folded in close relation, and the attached netting or screen wrapped therearound.
l/Vhile a special use has been explained in ICO holder of greater length and Width than the l In testimony that I claim the foregoing as said series of bows and movable over the latmy oWn I have hereto aixed my signature in ter and also over the outer side of the netting, the presence of two Witnesses. the terminals of said holder beingr applied to FRANK D. BENTLEY.
5 the outer sides of the said supporting devices Aand adapted to be arranged over one end of the net to hold the latter in applied position.
Witnesses: A. A. CANFIELD, l I. E. CoRsEN.
