HAT-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,639, dated June 3, 1902.
Application filed March 12, 1902. Serial No. 97,920. (No model.)

Be it known that 1', AUGUST STAMM, a citizen of the United States, residingin NewYork,
borough of'Manhattan and State of New York,

In the accompanying-drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a straw hat-with'my improved hat-guard applied thereto, showing the same in position whennot in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the hatguard in position ready for use. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hat-guard, showing the same applied to a hat and drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line Y 4 4, Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are respecthis purpose with two openings or eyes f, the cord being passed from the rear of the.
clamping device fthrough one of the openings f to the front, then through the other opening f to the rear, where the cord is tied into a knot d, so as to prevent its detaching from the clampingdevice f. The front end of the clamping device f is provided with a V-shaped hookf that serves for clamping shown inFigs.v 1, 3, and 4, the cord being for this purpose passed into the tapering recess of the V-shaped hook,which bites sufficiently into the cord to firmly retain the same in the clamping device.
For attaching the cord to the body of the hat the flat tapering pin e is placed on the other end of the cord from the clamping device f,the cord being pulled through the hole e in the body of the pin and tied into a knot 1 The pin is then pierced through the body of the hat near the brimuntil it has passed through the same, leaving the knot d to remain outside of the hat A; Then by pulling upon-the cord from without the hat the pin assumes a position in contact with the inside of the hat-body, as shown in Fig. 4. The .body of the, cord is then placed around the body of the hat, they-shaped ho'okf of the clamping device engaging the sheet metal and stamped into the form of a snake, as shown in Fig.1 5, which adds attractiveness to the hat-guard and forms a neat, convenient, and readily-applied device for preventing the hat from being carried away by the wind.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty l. A hat-guard, consisting of a cord, a flat pointed pin attached to one end of said cord, and a clamping device attached to the opposite end of the cord and provided with a V- shaped hook for engaging with the cord, substantially as set forth.
