Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BARDEN,a citizen of the United States,residin g at Springfield, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and use,- ful Improvements in Puzzles, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming-a part of the same. 4 f

This invention relates to improvements in picture or like puzzles in which a picture, map, diagram, or othermatter is ldivided up into sections mounted on blocks or the like, the picture or the like being completed when the several blocks are brought together in a certain order and in a certain alinement.

It is the object of the present invention to v provide a puzzle of this character of simplev and lnexpensive construction and one in which the difliculty of bringing together the different blocks of the puzzle in proper order: to complete the picture or the like will be sufficient to render thepuzzle interesting withf blocks of the puzzle. v Fig is a bottom plan' view of the same. Referring to Figs.v l to 5 of the drawings, A represents a series of blocks, which may be of any desired thiokness and number and which may also be of the disk or circular form shown or of angular or other'cross-section. vEach of these blocks A is providedv on` its edge with a portion or section of a picture, which picture v is completed, as shown, when the several blocks are superposed in proper order and alinement and is incomplete in any other order of said blocks or when said blocks are out of alinem ent. In place of a picture any other subject may be divided up on the several blocks as, for example, av map, diagram, ,&c. The blocks A are adapted to be strung upon a support, which in the preferred embodiinent of the present invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 consists of a pair of rods B B, which are adapted to enter corresponding openings B' B' in the blocks A. The rods B B are connected at their upper ends with a cross-head or knob O and at their lower ends are adapted to receive a like cross-header knob D, as shown in Fig. 4. This introduces another difficulty in the assembling together properly of the several blocks.` If desired, the number of openings B' B'may be increased, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, so as to increase the number of positionsV the blocks may occupy upon the rods B B, and thus further increase the difficulty of properly assembling the blocks.

Although the Structure shown in Fig. 5 is preferred, other structures may be adopted without departing from the inventi'on. For example, a single rod B may be employed, as shown in Fig. 6,-in place of tworods, provided with a feather b, adapted, when the rod B enters the openings B' in blocks A, to enter a groove b' in each of said blocks, and thus permit turning of said blocks on rod B.

What is claimed is-- 1. A puzzle comprising a suitable support and a plurality of blocksadapted to be superposed and strung on said4 support and provided' on their edges with sections-of apicture or the like which is completed when said The rods B B and-openings B' B'! IOO blocks are superposedf in proper sequence,

said blocks and support being so formed that when the blocks are strung on said support they are held thereby against turning, substantially as described.

2. A puzzle comprising a suitable support and a pluralit)T of blocks adapted to be superposed and strung on said support and provided on their edges with sections of a picture or the like which is completed when said blocks are superposed in proper sequence, said blocks being provided With openings inside their edges for the passage of the support, the said openings and support being so formed that the blocks when strung on said support are held against turning, substantially as described.

3. A puzzle comprising a suitable support and a plurality of blocks adapted to be superposed and strung on said support and provided on their edges With sections of a picture or the like which is completed When said blocks are superposed in proper sequence and alinement, said support being so formed as to permit the blocks to be strung thereon in proper alnement and also out of proper alinement and in either of said positions of the blocks to prevent turning thereof, substantially as described.

A puzzle colnprising a suitable support and a plurality of blocks adapted to be superposed and strung on said support and provided on their edges with sections of a picture or the like which is completed When said blocks are superposed in proper sequence andproper alinernent, said blocks being each provided With a plurality of openings inside Iheir edges for the passage of the support,

said openings and support being so formed as to perinit the blocks to be strung on the support in proper alinement and also out of proper alinement and to prevent turning of the blocks on the support in either of said positions, substantially as described.

5. A puzzle comprising a plurality of rods conn ected together and a plurality of blocks each provided With a like number of openings adapting them to be superposed on said support and provided on their edges with sections of a picture or the like which is completed when said blocks are superposed in proper sequence and alinernent, said rods and openings being so disposed as to permit the blocks to be strung on said rods in proper alinement and also out of proper alinement and in either of said positions of the blocks to prevent turning thereof, substantially as described.

6. A puzzle comprising a plurality of rods B and a plurality of blocks A provided on their edges With sections of a picture or the like which is completed when said blocks are superposed in proper sequence and alincment, said blocks being provided with openings B' equal in number and corresponding in position to the rods B, said rods being of such length as to each pass through the several blocks, substantially as described.
