ARNOLD NESCH, OF FLAWIL, SWITZERLAND.
CATTLE-PROBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,296, dated June 24, 1902.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1901. Serial No. 64,673. (No model.)
To al?, whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD NESCH, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Flawil, canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle- Probes; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
This invention relates to veterinary surgical instruments, and has for its object to provide an improved probe for piercing the intestines of cattle when inflated or overloaded with gas, which condition very often follows the eating of certain kinds of plants or food or is caused bya disordered condition of the intestines.
With this object in View the invention consists in a probe of the improved construction hereinafter described and afterward specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in elevation of an instrument constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Figs. 4 and 5 are re spectively views in elevation and transverse section of a slightly-modified construction.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they occur in the several figures of the drawings.
The probe consists of a handle a, to which is firmly secured ashaft b, having an inclined piercing and cutting edge c on one side of the shaft atits farther extremity and extending, as at e, to a point outside of the longitudinal axis of the shaft, and a longitudinal conduit CZ, through which the gas is allowed to escape when the probe is struck into the iniiated part of the intestine7 said conduit being in the form of a groove, as in Figs. l, 2, and 3, in one side of the shaft or of a slot, as in Figs. 4 and 5, extending laterally through shaft.
The conduitdwhenin the form of a groove is preferably arranged on the top of the shaft b and the edge c on the bottom, as clearly indicated in Fig. l of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A cattle-probe comprising a shaft having` an inclined cutting and piercing edge disposed at its outer end extending back and outward beyond the longitudinal axis of the shaft, and provided with a longitudinal conduit in the shaft extending rearwardly toward its handle end, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. NESCII.
