CHARLES S. SIIYCH, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS.
COMBINED IVIOP AND WIWRINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,383, dated January 27, 1903.
i Application led May 7', 1902. Serial No. 106,333. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. SHYCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi' cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mop and Vringer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined mops and wringers; and its object is to provide a device of this character having novel means whereby the cloth of the mops may be securely fastened to the handle thereof.
Another object is to employ means for readily wringing the cloth when it is desired to drain water therefrom.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a handle having a funnel-like end thereto. A rod is slidably mounted in the handle and extends through the said end. The mop-cloth is secured to this rod in a novel manner, whereby the same is prevented from slipping out of position. A grip is employed upon the rod, whereby the same may be slid in the handle and cause the cloth to become contracted in the funnel-like end, thereby squeezing the water therefrom. Means are also used for locking said rod against movement while the mop-cloth is in use.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the cloth-securing washer, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the stud.
Referring to the gures by numerals of reference, l is a tubular handle having a knob 2 at one end thereof and a funnel 3 at the opposite end. Slots 4 are formed in opposite sides of the handle for the reception of laterally-extending grips 5, secured to a rod 6, slidably mounted in the handle. This rod is also tubular and is held normally projected into the funnel 3 by means of a lug 7, extending from a spring-pressed lever 8 and adapted to engage one of a series of apertures 9, formed in the rod. This lever Sis pivoted between lugs l0, extending from the handle, and is adapted to be depressed by a finger of the operator, thereby compressing its spring 11 and disengaging the lug 7 from the rod 6. The outer end of rod 6 is internally threaded to engage a stud 12, having a squared or angular end 13, adapted to project into an aperture 14, formed in a plate 15. This plate has pins 1G extending from one face thereof, which engage a sponge 17, said sponge being held in engagement therewith by means of a plate 1S. This washer is clamped upon the sponge and pins by means of a nut 19, mounted upon a threaded bolt 20, extending through the two plates 18 and 15 and through stud 12. A nut 2l serves to lock this bolt in position in the stud.
The device is normally arranged as shown in the drawings. To use it, it is merely necessary to dip the sponge into water and scrub or wash with it as ordinarily. When, however, it is desired to extract the water from the sponge, the lever 8 is depressed, thereby unlocking the rod, and said rod is drawn backward by means of the grips 5. This will cause the sponge to become compressed in funnel 8,and the water contained therein will be squeezed outward. The parts can then be returned to their normal positions and the operation repeated as before.
By providing a funnel 3 for the reception of the mop-cloth any size of sponge can be squeezed thereby.
The knob 2 permits the handle to be pressed against the body of the operator without inconveniencewhile the sponge is being drained.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with a tubular handle, ofa funnel secured to one end thereof,a holder slidably mounted in the handle and having a threaded bolt at its outer end, plates mounted on the said bolt to secure a cleaning device to the holder, and means for retaining the IOO adjustment of the holder in relation to the handle.
2. The combination with a handle, of a funnel secured to one end thereof, a holder slidably mounted in the handle and through the center of the funnel, means for locking the holder in adjusted position, a screw-threaded bolt secured to the front end of the holder, and securing-plates mounted ou the Screwthreaded bolt, one of the plates having a plurality of pointed pins extending toward the other plate.
3. The combination With a slotted tubular
