CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,489, dated February 3, 1903. Application filed November 28,1902. Serial No. 133,151. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MIQUEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney Caps, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in chimneys, and more particularly to a cap therefor.
The object of my invention is to provide a suitable covering for the upper or exposed surface of the chimney which will protect the same from rain, snow, and the like and one that will give the chimney a finished and ornamental appearance.
Another object resides in providing such a cap as will be practicably indestructible and fireproof.
Finally, the object of myinvention is to provide such a device as will be strong, durable, and efficient and one that will be easy to apply and inexpensive to make.
Furthermore, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings herein.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a chimney, showing my improved cap applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cap and taken on the line as m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the wire-netting cores.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the chimney, and 2 the cap. In the drawings I have shown a chimney with two fines; but I do not wish to limit myself to that particular style of chimney, as the cap might be made in Various shapes to suit difierent styles of chimneys.
The cap 2 is preferably composed of some plastic material; but it may be constructed of any suitable material that will accomplish the desired results. The cap as I have shown it is rectangular in shape and is provided with two rectangular openings 3, separated by central partition 6 and having its outer edge convexed or rounded. I make the cap somewhat larger than the chimney, so as to afford greater protection and give the chimney a more attractive appearance. In molding the cap I use cores of wire-netting 4,
which conform in shape to the general contour of the cap, although being of less breadth than the cap, so as not to project from the edges thereof. The Wire-nettings 4 as I have shown them are. provided with central openings 5 and a central connecting-strip 7. I usually employ two of these cores or formers 4 in composing a cap; but I might use one or more, if desirable. It will be readily seen that the wire-nettings 4: will not only hold the material in shape when it is being molded, but will add stiffness and strength to the finished cap.
When a chimney is to be capped, the upper or top course of bricks is covered with a coating of cement or other suitable binding material and the cap placed thereon and allowed to set. Thus it will be evident that the application of the cap not only adds to the appearance of the chimney, but provides a covering for the top which will be practicably unaffected by the weather, and thereby protecting the chimney and prolonging the life thereof.
I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction and operation herein set forth, as I may make various changes in the same Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new is' 1'. A chimney-cap having an opening therein, and. a metallic core molded in the cap, substantially as described.
2. A chimney-cap having an opening therein, and a wire-netting core molded in the cap, substantially as described.
3. A chimney-cap having an opening therein, a partition standing across the opening, and a wire-netting core molded in the cap, substantially as described.
4. A rectangular chimney-cap havinga rectangular opening therein, a central partition standing across the opening, and a metallic core molded in the cap, substantially as described.
