DIAPER.V
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,306, dated. March 24, 1903.
Application tied June 14, 1902.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FRANCES LOUISE Rs1n,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Diapers, of which the fol- My invention relates to diapers suitable for children; and the objects of the invention are to render such diapers pinless, to make them more readily adj ustable,` to make them adjustable by strings, to provide an exterior part suitable for inclusion of waterproof pads or absorbent pads, and to improve such articles generally.
To these ends the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, as are herein set forth, and illustrated in the drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is an inside View of a diaper constructed according to my invention unfastened and lying open, with part broken away to assist in showing the construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line :c a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the edges, out of the hem of which extends a tyingstring. Fig. -1 is an outward rear side view of the upper or band. portion of the diaper. Fig. 5 is a general diagrammatic view showing the twoprincipal Vcomponent parts and the method of joining them together. Fig. 6 is a View of one of my diapers closed and parts. A
Similar characters of reference denote like and corresponding parts throughout'tlie several views. i j j Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a subside and two curved sides, a wide-open hem or band 5 extending along the straight side thereof and open hems 10 10 along the other sides thereof.
To the center of the cloth 1 is fastened an additional cloth 2 by means of two seams 3 and 4, the seam 3 being substantially parallel pendicular to the seam 3. The said cloth 2 is constructed with flaps 16, 17 and 18, which are folded inwardly, so as to lie within the triangular form of the cloth 1. The band 5 is constructed from a wide hem carrying a p ward through an eyelet-hole.
ends of the tying-string 13 are additional ty-A the band onthe wearer.
serial No. 111.695. (No model strong string 13, fastened near the middle 20 and having each of its ends extending out- Opposite the ing-strings 11 and 12, arranged, respectively, to be tied to an end of the string 13. The
4band 5 is rfurther provided with a button 6 and a buttonhole 7 for the purpose of closing Thethird angle of the diaper is secured to the' same button by means of the buttonhole 6.- In the hems 10 10' are additional tying-strings 8 8', extending out through eyelet-holes, similar to the tyingstring 13. These tying-strings, as is apparent, when the diaper is placed in position are designed to have their ends tied at the loops ,21 and 22, thus making adjustable openings in the vicinities of lO 10'. The tying-string A13 likewise has its ends tied to the cords 11 and 12, forming the bow-knots 14: and 15 at the leftA and right sides, respectively, causing the gathers 19 in the band 'thereof, whereby the band is adjusted according to the requirements before it is buttoned.
In using the device any additional absorbent, padding, or waterproof material may be placed within the flaps 16, 17, and 18 and are by the construction thus held in position. The article may of course also be used without any additional padding, if desired. The band is ofcourse adj usted to the proper length beforeloeing buttoned, and the leg adjustments are regulated by the strings 8 and 8'.
Having thus described my invention, I do not wish to be confined to the exact construction set forth, as it is evident that the details Ymay be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention-as, for instance, the edges of the flaps 17 and-18 might be con nected so as to form a sort of pocket of 'those two iiaps for the purpose of inserting absorbent material. Other variations might be resorted to without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein described diaper substantially triangular in form having open hems in each of the three sides thereof, adrawingstring inserted in each of the said hems, the ends of said drawing-strings extending outward through slits, whereby each of the three IOO sides may be adj usted to the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. The herein described pinless diaper comprised in a` substantially triangular cloth 1 having open hems at the three sides thereof, a supplemental cloth 2 secured to the central part thereof, drawing-Strings inserted in the hems of the three sides of the cloth 1 aforesaid, the ends of said strings arranged to be tied for the purpose of adjusting the diaper, substantially as specified.
3. In a diaper the combination with a main triangular part having open hems and drawing-strings inserted therein, of a supplemental part composed of a plurality of flaps centrally attached to the said main part,'and the said iiaps arranged to be folded inwardly so as to be included within the area of the main part, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
4. In a triangular diaper of the kind described, its three sides having open hems, drawing-strings inserted therein, one of the said drawing-strings arranged to adjust the cloth of the diaper around the waist of the wearer, and thehother two strings arranged to adjust the cloth of the diaper around the legs of the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCES LOUISE REID.
