Be it known that I, WARREN P. VAN LOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New `York, in the county of New York and .State of New York, have invented new. and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brushes, and particularly to means for adjusting the handles of the same; and the object in view is to' provide simple and effective means in connection with a brush-head whereby the handle may be moved into various positions to conveniently assist in the use of the brush in corners of floors or angles of Walls to facilitate the removal of dirt and dust therefrom.

With this and other objects and advantages in view lthe invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central transverse vertical section through a'brush and handle-socketattachment embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of a brush head or back, showing the improved handle adjusting means applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the adjusting means. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3.

Similar nu meralsof. reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The numeral l designates a brush head or back of any suitable form and provided, as usual, with brush-bristles or other devices 2. The head or back 1 may be of rectangular, oblong, or oval shape, and applied to and firmly secured in place on the upper side of the head or back is an aunulus 3, having an inner circumferential groove 4 to provide a shoulder 5. The aunulus is radially slotted at regular intervals, as at G, the several slots converging toward the outer edge of the annulus and having pins 7 extending upwardly from the bottom walls thereof and centrally located in relation to the several slots, a single pin rising from the center of each slot. The aunulus is held in immovable connection to the head or back l by screws or other analogous fastenings passed therethrough, and

rotatably held by the said aunulus on the head or back is a center plate 8, having an integral handle-socket 9, extending upward and outwardly therefrom at an angle of inclination,

the said socket being tapered downwardly toward the plate.V The plate 8 moves under the shoulder 5, and the fulcrumfor said plate consists of a Vscrew pin or bolt 10, passed through the center thereof and the head or back l, as clearly shown by Fig. 1.

The inner end of a locking-catch 11 in the form of a plate-spring is held on the center plate 8 under the head of the bolt or pin 10, the said locking-catch being long enough to extend outwardly and enter either one of the slots 6 in the annulus3, and for convenience in operating the said catch the outer end 12 is slightly upturned and projects beyond the aunulus. Rising from the plate 8 for engagement by the catch l1' is a stud 13, an opening 14 being formed in the said catch to permit the studto pass therethrough, and outwardly from the opening 14 is a second opening 15, through which the several pins 7 are also adapted to pass. A handle of any suitable length is inserted in the socket 9, and in Yadjusting the said handle the catch l1 is released from the annulus by drawing upwardly on said catch and disengaged from either one of the pins 7, and

at such time orafter such disengagement has ensued the catch is permitted to become reengaged with the stud 13 and is turned with the center plate over the upper surface of the aunulus and will be held up in passing over the slot 6 preceding that in which it is desired the catch shall rest to attain the adjustment desired. When the catch is in engagement withthe stud 13 and either one of the slots 6 and pins 7, the plate 8 will be positively held against movement and the adj ustment of the socket 9 and handle therein can be immovably maintained.

Through the medium of the adjustable features set forth a brush head or back may be disposed at any angle for convenience in reaching fully in the corners or angles of a wall and assist in a thorough cleaning operation in relation to a oor or walls.

The outward inclination of the socket 9 disposes the handle in such manner that the brush may be conveniently manipulated in its use, and the outward reduction of the slots 6 renders the operation of the catch ll, more effective.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as newr is* The combination with a brush-back, of an annulus secured thereon and having radial slots therein with pins projecting upwardly therefrom, a rotatable center plate disposed within the annulus and having a stud rising therefrom, the said center plate carrying a 'handle-socket, and a spring-catch movable with the center plate and provided with openings to engage the stud and pins.
