TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that we, G. lV. R. BAYLEY :1nd JOHN McCLUSKEY, of Algiers,.in the parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locking Car-Seats; and we do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable otliers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in locking and unlocking the reversible seat-backs of railroad passenger-cars, whereby all the scat-backs on one side of the car can be locked or unlocked simultaneously.
It consists' of abar running along the side, from near one end of the car to the other, having t\ vo pins to each car-scat. The seat-back has on its side two groovesor metal lips, or slotted bars, and by turning the bar on which the pins are carried, the pins catch on or inthe lip or groove or slotted bar, and lock the seat-back in any desired position. In the accompanying drawings- I Figure l is a. side view of our improved device for' locking and unlocking cnr-seats.
Figure 2 is an end vien thereof, and I Figure 3 is a. separate view of the slotted bar, which may be used in substitution for the lip upon the end of the seat-back next the side of the car.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bar of metal attached to the' side -X of the car, just above the l'evel of the seats B, and extends past all the seats on one side of the car, to which it is secured, at suitable intervals, by half caps, or any other suitable device. At certain intervals along the bar, ldetermincd as hereinafter mentioned, by the situation of' the reversible seat-backs in both positions, pins, a, are inserted in the bar, which may be straight or curved, as seen at a, iig. 2, or hooked. On'the end of the seat-back next the side of the car, is a groove or slotted bar, D, tig. 3, or lip E, tig. 1, and the intervals at which the pins a are set upon the bar, lare so adjusted that the pins shall catch in the grooves or slotted bars D, or on the lips E. Eye-bolts may be substituted for the pins a, on the bar A, sitting into hooks upon the seat-back, substituted fof the lip, or grooved or slotted bar.
The bar A is operated by a key, a quarter turn whereof removes the pins a from the grooves, slots, or lips, unlocking the seats, or sets the pins therein, locking the same. cap F over the head tted'to receive the key, by a padlock, G, or other suitable means.
Having thus described our invention, what ive claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bar A and pins a, disposed on said bar A, substantially as abovedescribed, in combination with the lips E, or their equivalent, in manner and for the purpose substantially as above set forth aud described.
2. The said bar A, in combination with the halt' cap F and padlock G, in manner and for the purposes above set forth and described.
The abov specification et' our invention signed by us, this 6th day of July, 1867.
' G. w. R; BAYLEY,
'JOHN McCLUSKEY.
