. SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 732,844, dated July "7, 1903.
Application filed Septemher 18, 1902. Serial No. 123,946. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be itknown that I, EDWARD GERBEREUX, a resident of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes, the object of the invention being to provide a box made from a single blank forming two receptacles one above the other when the box is open and both .receptacles closed at the bottom, so that goods will be held there- 1 in when the box is opened,an d' so construct thesame that the receptacles can befolded side by side and locked in such position for convenience in carrying, and while the box is especially adapted for use as a cigarette or cigar box it is also applicable for a great many other uses, and I do not confine myself to any particular use, but cover the box for all uses to which it may beput.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts,
as will be more fully hereinafter described,
and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the box closed. Fig. 2 is a view of the box opened. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the box is made, and. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken through the box when closed.
and coiiperate to form The blank comprises a main strip 1, having four wings 2, 3, 4, and 5 on opposite sides thereof. These wings are arranged in pairs the receptacles, as
,will be hereinafter explained.
The end of strip 1 below wings 4 and 5 is folded upon lines 6 and 7, forming the bottom 8 of the lower receptacle and a tongue 9 to be folded into the lower receptacle. The wings 10 and 11, ofthe receptacle and flaps 13, having interlocking slits 14to lock theflaps together and form the lower receptacle. The wings 2 and 3 are folded upon the lines 15 and 16 to form the lines 17 and 18 the bottom of the upper receptacle andupon to form the sides of the receptacle and-the overlapping front laps, one ofwhich enters a slit 15 in the line 15 of the other and engages a tongue 19 on the other flap to lock them together and form the front of the upper receptacle. All of the flaps 2 3 and 4 5 are cut at their upper edge on a curve to permit ready access to the cigarettes or other goods therein and expose them to view when the box is open. Between the receptacles the strip 1 is folded upon the lines 20 21 to permit the receptacles to fold up side byside, and the upperend of the strip is shaped to form a tongue 22 and folds on the lines 23 and 24 to permit the tongue to fold over the lower receptacle and enter a slit 25 therein to lock the box in its closed position. 1
It will be seen that with my improvements two receptacles are provided, one above the other when the box is open, thus giving a large amount of space for the goods and pre venting their falling out, as both receptacles will be bottom downward when open.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangementof the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limitmyself to the precise construction set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A box made from a single sheet or blank folded to form two connected receptacles, the front side of each receptacle being formed of two wings folded and secured together, each receptacle being provided with a permanentlyclosed lower end formed of one or more wings or flaps folded and secured in place, the upper end of each receptacle being open when the box is open, the said receptacles being adapted to be folded side by side and secured by a flap and having movable covers for the upper open ends of the receptacles, substan tially. as set forth.
2. A blank for boxes, consisting of a central portion, four side wings, depending porcover for the upper end of the lower receptacle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDW. GERBEREUX.
