Description

@uitrit tutrs gatrat @fitter IMPRGVEMBNT IN VENEERS.
@te tlgchnle referat tu n'gtsr rttrts ntrrt mit hating tutti tige sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Be it known that I, JOHN B. WILSON, of New York; of New York county, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Veneers; andI do hereby declare that the following is afull and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this application.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the manufacture of veneers. Previous to myvinvention it has been customary, in the cutting or making of veneers, to cut the log with va straight knife, that is to say, in such armanner that the log would be cut aboutin the direction of its length,
so that in the production of veneers from a plain or straight-grained log, the veneers would present littleor no gure v My invention has for its object the production of veneers of considerable fgure, from a log having little or no figure of grain; and to this end, my invention consists in a veneer formed by cutting olf a waved, crimped,
p or corrugated slab or stratum from the log, in such manner that the cut surface shall present the diiferentshades of the grains, as cut at different angles alternately, in lieu of only the grain cut in ono straight line from end to end, as heretofore.
'.lo enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention, I will proceed to more fully describe it, referring by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an edge view of a veneer cut in a corrugated form.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is' an edge view of another corrugated veneer, made with a different degree of curvature in the corrugations.
In the production of such veneers, I propose to employ the machinery and process described in'Lettcrs Patent granted to me on the 19th day of March, 1867, and numbered 63,128, (and which I need not describe here,) or any other apparatus which may be found expedient. It will be seen that by producing a veneer from' 'a log by means of a corrugated or waved cut, in the direction of the length Vof the log, in contradistinetion to the process or method of forming veneers heretofore practisccLI am enabled to give to the surface oftheyeneer a very figured and beautiful appearance, when the log from which the veneer is cut may be a plain one, oralog without figuref I propose generally, in the use of my improved veneers, to press them out at, to apply to plane surfaces, but they maybe made, adapted, and applied to corrugated or other-formed surfaces, with perfect facility, as will be understood by those familiar with the manufacture and use of veneers.
I am aware that veneers or slabs have been cut from a logby a straight cut running from the periphery, through the different grains, to the centre, and I do not wish my invention to be confounded with any such process; neither do I wish it to be understood as limiting myself, in carrying out my invention, to the particular form of veneer shown, so long as the surface of the veneer is made by cutting alternately, lengthwise, through the different grains of the log, or, so to speak, by a cut running alternately to greater and less depths'in the stock of the log, as described.`
Having explained my invention so that those skilled can understand itfully, what I claim as a new article of manufacture, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The veneer produced by a corrugated or zigzag eut, substantially in the manner as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto s'ct my hand and seal, this 26th day of A pril, 1867.
