PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. HAYES, OF EAST TAVVAS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS HAYDEN BRADDOCK, OF TAWVAS CITY, MICHIGAN.
VEGETABLE-COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,640, dated February 9, 1904.
Application filed October 28, 1903. Serial No. 178,902. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN H. HAYEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Tawas, in the county of Iosco and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Vegetable- Cooker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cooking utensils and the like, and one of the primary objects thereof is to provide a handle which may be normally retracted within the receptacle, but as occasion may demand be extended and swung to one side, so that the open end of the receptacle will be unobstructed.
A further object is to provide. a cover for the receptacle which is carried by the handle and mounted so that the movement of the cover will be coincident with the movement of the handle. Other objects and advantages as well as the novel details of construction will be specifically described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View, partly in section and partly in plan, of the innor receptacle and the boiler or pot in connection with which it is used. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the connection between one of the guides and one of the handle-terminals.
The receptacle 1 is illustrated as comprising a wire basket having spaced rings 2 and 3 and longitudinal side wires 1. Interposed between the rings 2 and 3 and adjacent side wires L are oppositely-disposed guides 5 and 6, each comprising a tubular body with bifurcated terminals 7 and 8 for engagement with the respective rings 2 and 3.
9 designates a bail or handle having parallel slotted terminals 10, which are slidably mounted in the guides 5 and 6 and are held against displacement by the intermediate portion 11 of the wire strand 12, which passes through opposite walls of the tube and through the slot in terminal of the bail. The ends of the wire strand are twisted or wrapped around the top ring of the basket, so as to securely fasten the tube thereto and serve as a stop to limit the movement of the handle-bail. The tubes also brace the basket and impart considerable strength thereto.
Carried by the handle and normally acting as a closure for the receptacle is a cover 13, movable coincidently with the handle and capable of having movement toward and away from the top of the receptacle, so as to swing out of a plane parallel to the plane of the top edge of the receptacle. The form of receptacle or basket employed is preferable in boiling; but other forms may be employed, if desired.
The operation of the device is evident. Suppose, for instance, it is desirable to boil food. The material is first placed in and the terminals of the bail are slid within the guide-tubes, so as to require the minimum amount of space, at the same time efficiently holding the cover on the top edge of the receptacle. When it is necessary or desirable to remove the contents of the basket, the handle is drawn outward from the guides until the terminals of the handle move to a point adjacent to the intermediate portion of the wire, when the wire will act as a fulcrum, permitting the handle to swing and carry the cover out of the way. hen desirable to recover the receptacle, the handle can be readily retracted. It Will also be observed that the cover 13 serves a dual purpose acting as a cover both for the inner receptacle and the outer receptacle or pot 15. IV hen the handle members are withdrawn from the guides, with their lower ends engaging the fastening-wire, it may be used in the ordinary manner to lift the basket from the pot.
hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A receptacle, tubular guides carried by the receptacle, a slotted handle working in the guides, means for securing the guides to the receptacle, terminally engaging the receptacle, and intermcdiately passing through the tubes and the slots in the handle.
2. A wire basket, having spaced rings, a handle-guide having bifurcated ends engaging the respective rings and a sliding handle in the guide.
3. A Wire basket, having spaced rings,- tubular braces interposed between the rings and having bifurcated terminals engaging the rings on opposite sides, and a binding-Wire 5 terminally engaging the rings and intermediately engaging the tubular brace.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixedmy signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN H. HAYES.
