To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MYRTIE M. RoeERs, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Upholstery, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide upholstered furniture which will be hygienic, serviceable, durable, and economical and including a filling which will give the requisite compactness of body and will be firm and elastic. 7

To illustrate the manner of carrying out the invention, I have shown and described it as applied to a mattress, although it is applicable to various forms of upholstered furniture, such as car seats and backs, chairs, sofas, &c.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar figures of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one of the sections of the mattress partly broken away and exposing the filling.

In applying the invention to a mattress the latter is preferably formed with any number of detachable sections 1, which may be fastened together in any suitable manner-as, for

example, by means of straps 2, of metal or other suitable material, connected to the sections 1 by any suitable fastening, such as the buttons 3 on the sections 1, engaging the eyes or openings 4 in the straps 2. The sections 1 are covered with a suitable material 5, adapted for mattresses or to other upholstered articles, according to the nature of the'articles, whether it be a car-seat, a chair, or a sofa, and in order to make the article of furniture antiseptic and hygienic the covering is pref-, erably medicated in any suitable manner and preferably by being boiled in boracic acid. In order also to make the article of furniture cool, pure, and free from odors, the overing 5, preferably, is provided with perforations 6, which aiford'sventilation for the article of furniture and renders it cool by conveying away the heat from the body.

Each section 1 is provided with a filling, the

top and bottom sections having a filling 7 of cotton-waste or other fibrous material and metal shavings, the middle section a filling of metal shavings-that is, metal wool or metalwaste. The metal shavings are mixed with the fibrous material to form a compact mass, and owing to their rough edges are closely commingled with and adhere to the fibrous material. The cotton-waste or fibrous material in the top and bottom sections is preferably medicated in any suitable manner and preferably by being boiled in boracic acid.

The metal-waste is a disinfectant in itself and an exterminator of vermin.

By means of the medication aforesaid disease germs are destroyed and the article of furniture is disinfected.

By having the mattress in sections any one of the sections may be taken out and cleaned in case of being soiled in case of sickness or other cause or to be repaired or recovered.

The filling of metal shavings or wool and fibrous material alfords not only an elastic body for the furniture upholstery, but also a firm, durable, and compact body, which in view of the material is economical. The metal shavings or metal wool is composedof shavings and cuttings from the manufacture of articles out of metal. Such shavings are in the form of spirals or curved pieces. These spiral curved pieces of steel serve to give a strong body to the stufiing as well as to render it elastic. The cotton-waste or other fibrous material combines with the steel-waste or wool to form a compact, firm, and at the same time elastic body, suitable for and meeting the requirements for a stufling for mattresses, car seats and backs, sofas, and other stuffed arti cles of furniture.

While I have herein set forth the preferred form of my construction, I do not care to be limited to the number of sections specified, (any number desirable may be used,) nor do I wish to be limited to the details therein shown, many of which may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention,which includes a filling for mattresses, upholstered furniture, and the like composed of any metal shavings or wool suitable for the purpose incorporated with a fibrous material, preferably cotton-waste, or any vegetable fiber.
