Description
UNITED STATES Patented April 19, 1904.'
PATENT OFFICE.
sPEoI'iercAiLIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,827, dated April 19, 1904. Application tiled July 15, 1903. VSerial No. 185,677. (No model.)
.To all .u1/tom 1T t may concern:
Beit known that I, MELBOURNE F. MIDDLE- TON, -a citizen of theUnited States of America, and a resident of Camden, in the county of' Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in boxes or other receptacles, made of paper, wood, or other material hof that class .in which provision is made` for securely fastening the parcel so that the fastening devices will not be in the way or. interfere with the addressing of the same or interfere with the post-oiiice stamp, a' bendable strip, or stripsbeing employed aiiixed within "the box and adapted to pass upward through a slot or slots in the cover and then .bent down upon the outside of the depending portion or flange of the cover.
The present invention 'has for its objects,
among others, to improve upon this class of v devices and provide a reinforce for the slot or slots through which the strip or strips extend and at the same time to provide an improved form of fastening means and manner of attach- -ing or afiixing the same within the' box;
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure `1 is a perspective view of a box provided with my improvements, the same being shown with the cover in position and secured by the fastening devices. Fig. 2 is a verticall cross-section through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the body portion of the box. Fig.' 4 is an inverted perspective View of the cover removed.' Fig. 5 is a perspective vewof the reinforce-strip for the cover removed.
'Like numerals of reference indicate like. 9 parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings,
l designates the body of the Jox, which may be of any suitable material, shape, or size and por-tion is the portion 5, which comprises 4the 55 four sides and ends, Without bottom, fitted snugly within the lower portion, with the lower `edgesof the sides and ends resting upon the upper surface of the bottom of the box and secured in any way. 6o
6 is a strip of bendable material, such as sheet metal or wire or the like, having the cross portion 7, lying upon the upper face of the bottom of the box, and vertical portions 8,
which are interposed between the adjacent ,faces ofthe sides of the lower portion '2 and the inner portion vwhereby the strip is firmly held 'in' place. The vertical portions of' the metal fastening are of such lengthas to ex-A tend above the upper edges of the sides of the 7 portion 5 and. above the'cover9 when the latter is in position and to benddown outward and against the outer faces of the depending ange of the cover, as seen clearly in Fig. 1.
The cover 9 has the depending flange por- 75 tion 10 and the slits or slots 11, through which the upper ends of the vertical portions 8 of the strip pass, the said erids being rounded or otherwise formed 4to facilitate their passing through the slots. cover at these points, I provide the same with the reinforce-strip 12, which is embedded in the cover-aa for instance, by being inserted between the inner Aface of its topportion and the lining or otherwise. ends bent .at right. angles to its length, and these ends lie flat against the inner faces of the side portions of the cover, as seen at 13. LSlots 14 are formed in this reinforce-strip near the bends, as seen in Figs. 4 and 5, for the pas- 90 sage of the ends of Ythe vertical portions of the strip 6. By this means the vertical portions 8 are prevented from coming in contact with thesides of the cover and the holes or slots in the cover are strengthened and reinforced and all danger of weakening of the cover at these points is obviated.
The m'ode of operation will be apparent from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and a In order to reinforce the 8O This strip has its 85 further description thereof is not deemed necessary.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the in vention or sacrificing any of its advantages. For instance, as seen 'in Fig. 3, the strip 6 may be disposed either between the bottom of the box and the covering or lining 7 X or embedded in the material oi' which the box' is formed. .Likewise as `indicateur in Fig. 2, the stripv may not be continiiious, but may he formed of. two parts with their ends disposed "as shown, the effect being substantially the same. Nire may be employed instead of the dat metal strip. lt is also to he understood that the invention is applicable tov any/and all kinds of boxes Iwhether 'ier mailing or Jfor other uses, such as for Candy, jewelry, olothing, cigars, or any other articles.
l. 'boX-body'having a bendable strip conined between the plies thereof, and a separate ianged cover for said box-body having siots for the passage of the ends of said strip` and a 'reinforce ifor said slots conned entireiy within the flanges of the cover and having rislitangled portions parallel with said anges.
' f2. A boxbody and a bendaole strip secured within the saine w ith its ends proiectinglg above the top thereof, combined with a cover for said body having iianges, and a reinforce for` saidzcover secured within the saine at the junctionof the side anges and top and having holes for the passage of the ends ci" the bendable strip, sald reinforeebeing conned between the plies of the top.
' 3. A box-cover for use with a box having a bendable fastei'nng-strip, the said cover having slots for the passage or the ends ot said strip and a reinforce aiiXed within the cover and confined between the plies thereof with its ends bent at right angles and lying' aiongide the inner faces of the fiange of the cover 'and having slots coincidentwith those in the 4. A. box-body comprising a lower portion with bottom and sides and ends, a portion litted therein and having its sldes extended above the sides of the lower portion, and a bendahle strip extended across thebottoin andconfined between the plies thereof and having its ends disposed vertically and between the sides of the lower and inner portions of the body.
5. A box-body comprising a lower portion' with bottom and, sides and ends', a portion titted therein and having its si des extended above the sides of the lower portion, a bendable strip eatended'aoross the bottom-within the box and having` its ends disposed vertically and between the sides of the lower and inner portions of the body', and a flanged cover provided with slots for the passage 'of the ends of said lstripv and with a reinforce conned within the anges thereof. A ,Y n
6. A box-body comprising aower'portion and an inner portion fitted therein, a bendable. strip normally confined within the walls of said' body between the upper andlovver portions with its ends extended vertically above the upper edge of the body. and fa cover havlng a Harige to extend over thev vertical portions of the-strip and over the sideportions of lthe body and to vrest on thenpper edge of .the the ends lower portion'and toibo pierced by of' the vertical portions oi' the strip.
