EYE-SHADE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 757,854, dated April 19, 1904,

Application filed April 23, 1903f To all, whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHAN R. WIoKER- SI-IAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Bethlehem, in the county of Lehigh, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eye-Shades, of which the following is a specification.

, My invention consists of an eye-shade having a band adapted to be applied to and retained on the head of the wearer so as to prevent the adjacent edge of the shade from contacting with the head and rubbing thereagainst, especially in the movements of the same.

It also consists in forming said piece of material so that it firmly clasps the head and retains the shade in position and preserves the bowed form of the shade.

. It also consists of novel means for uniting the shade and head-piece and permitting separation of said parts.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an eye-shade embodying my invention. Fig.

2 represents a central vertical section thereof,

showing also the shade in position on a head. Fig. 3 represents a view of the members of the device in separated and flat condition. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view, on a reduced scale, of another form of a member of the invention.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a vizor or eye-shade proper, the same being formed of suitable material and having at the ends thereof the reduced necks A and the T- heads or tongues B.

C designates a band composed of a piece of pliable material having at the ends thereof the T-shaped slots 'D, which are adapted toreceive the heads or tongues B, thus connecting the shade and band. It will be noticed that the distance between the opposite heads or tongues is less than that between the slots D. Consequently in assembling the parts the heads are successively inserted in the slots, this requiring the bending of the shade and insertion of the heads into the wide limbs of the slots, after which the necks A ride into the Serial No. 163.897. narrow limbs of said slots, when the under sides of said heads seat themselves against the bases of the narrow limbs of said slots, thus interlocking the ends of the shade with those of the band and firmly connecting the parts, it being seen that the band is resilient in its nature, the shade in a measure partaking of the same, whereby when the device is applied in position the band gently but firmly embraces the forehead and side portions of the head, and so retains the shade in place, it being noticed that the band is interposed between the shade and head of the wearer, and the upper end of the shade, the edge of which end is concave, bears upon the outer face of the band, the latter thus acting as a guard for preventing direct pressure of the shade upon the head, avoiding the contact of the edge of the shade with the latter. Again, as the connection of the shade with the band is somewhat yielding the shade may be raised and lowered, in which motions the upper part or edge rides and rubs on the band C, the advantage of which is evident.

When service of the shade is not required,

the parts are manipulated to bring the heads B into register with the wide limbs of the slots D, when said heads may be withdrawn through said slots and the parts are disconnected, after which they may be laid out flat, convenient for carrying, packing, &c., as apparent in Fig. 3. In order to prevent any possible separation of the rear open ends 6f the band, a piece E, of elastic, may be connected with said ends, the same also, if desired, serving to increase the pressure or holding power of the band on the head.

In Fig. 4 I show a band C, adapted to pass entirely around the head instead of being disconnected, as shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the band being provided, respectively, with a tongue, such as B, and slots, such as D, whereby the ends may be connected and the band adapted for heads of diiferent sizes. In the band. are T-shaped slots D to receive the tongues B of the shade A in order to adjust and hold the latter on the band.

Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An eye-shade comprising a band and a separate vizor freely secured thereto, the upper edge of said vizor being movable on the outer face of said band.

2. An eye-shade comprising a band and a vizor, the upper edge of which is vertically adjustable on said band. 3. An eye-shade comprising a band and a vizor separate therefrom, the upper edge of said vizor being concave, said vizor being secured to said band adjacent its ends and having movable contact directly with the outer face thereof.

4. An eye-shade comprising a band and a vi- Zor, the upper edge of which is concave, said vizor being secured to said band adjacent its ends so as to contact directly with the outer face thereof and to be vertically adjustable thereon.

5. An eye-shade comprising a band and a separate vizor detachably connected therewith, the upper edge of said vizor having moving contact directly with the outer face of said band, said band and said vizor being of different lengths between their points of separate vizor, said parts being connected at their ends and said vizor being movable on the outer face of said band.

8., An eye-shade comprising a band and a vizor detachably connected together by means of coacting slots and tongues engageable in said slots.

9. An eye-shade comprising a resilient band and a separate resilient vizor'detachably connected thereto, whereby the .upper edge of said vizor has moving contact with the outer face of said band. v

10. An eye-shade comprising aband, aseparate vizor detachably secured thereto and means for retaining said band in position, the upper edge of said vizor being movable on the outer face of said band.
