PATENT OFFICE. l
DISPLAY AND RESERVE-STOCK CASE FOR THIIVIBLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,529, dated July 5, 1904.
Application led April 18, 1904.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, J OSEPII BAKER INeALLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display and Reserve- Stock Cases for Thimbles; and I do hereby dcclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionfof the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a display and reserve-stock case for thimbles in which the different varieties and sizes of thimbles may be artistically exhibited and the attention of the shopper directed thereto and from 'which the selection may be conveniently made and the customer supplied from the stock at the rear ofthe case, thereby materially facilitating and rendering it convenient in making the sale. Y
The invention consists in a display and reserve-stock case for thimbles constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a case constructed in accordance with my invention, the door to the rear of the case being' shown as partially open to show the construction thereof; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation taken transversely through the case.`
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a case of wood or other suitable material and of any desirable size, form, and dimensions found best adapted to the purpose and provided with an inclined front B, to which are secured horizontal rows of shelves a, upon which the thimbles rest, as indicated at X. v
Over the front of the case is a glass door C, which door is hinged or otherwise connected thereto, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby the thimbles will be artistically eX- hibited and in plain View of the customer.
Any suitable number of shelves may be used and may be of any preferred length to hold any desired number of thimbles, this being left discretionary with the manufacturer, and in the rear of the case is a plurality of Serial No. 203,630. (No model.)
circular chambers D, in which are located suitable springs E. the springs In the present Instance being shown as metal springs comprising spiral coils of wire of the required diameter to loosely fit in the chambers.
To the upper end ofthe spring E is secured a flanged support F, which is slightly tapering to conform to the taper of the thimble, over which the thimble fits and rests, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and to prevent the support and spring from extending through the open end of the chamber the Hange l) of the support will abut against the stop c around the open end of the chamber to prevent the support from extending entirely out of the opening in the chamber.
The several chambers D may be constructed in various ways, either separately or from a single block of woodtor other Suitable Inaterial. Thetop of the upper one of the row of thimbles, as indicated at Y, bears against a mortised seat i at the upper end of the case to hold the row of thimbles above the chamber in an upright line or vertically, so that the thimbles will not move laterally. This mortised seat, one being provided for each row of thimbles, is shown as upon the under side of the top of the case; but it is evident that any suitable seat may be provided or any means used for the upper one of the thimbles to engage to hold the row of thimbles in an upright position, as found most practical.
The rear of the case A is provided with a door G, hinged or otherwise connected thereto and which may be held closed by any suitable fastening device found best adaptcd to the purpose, and when any particular thimble is required from the stock at the rear of the case the row of thimbles containing the same is pressed down until the top of the upper one of the thimbles is released from its seat, when it may be removed, the spring in the chamber keeping the upper one of the thimbles engaged with the seat at the top of the case.
The number of thimbles in a row may be increased by compressing the spring to make room for the thimbles to extend down into the chamber, thereby enabling an `increased number of thimbles to be held between the flanged support F and the mortised seat (l.
IOO
In describing the several details of construction I wish it understood that it is not absolutely necessary that every part of the device should be constructed as shown, as various changes and modifications may be resorted to without in any manner departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isF
1. A display and reserve stock case for thimbles, comprising a compartment from which the thimbles may be exhibited at the front of the case and a plurality of chambers at the rear thereof, springs located therein having supports upon which rows of thimbles rest to hold the reserve stock thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A display and reserve-stock case for thimbles, comprising a compartment from which the thimbles may be exhibited at the front of the case, and a plurality of chambers having stops at the upper ends thereof, springs located in the chambers, flanged supports upon the upper ends of the springs and adapted to receive a row of thimbles, and means for holding the rows of thimbles in an upright position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A display and reserve-stock case for thimbles, comprising an inclined front having a plurality of suitable shelves for the thimbles, a glass door therefor, a plurality of chambers located in the rear of the case, springs located in the chambers, supports upon the ends of the springs with which rows of thimbles engage and means for engaging the upper one of the rows to retain the same in an upright position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH BAKER INGALLS.
