SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,059, dated July 26, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE CLIFFORD PAL- MER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in pocket-knives, the object being to provide a knife of novel construction in which the blades when not in use are wholly concealed within the handle, the said handle consisting of two sections having hinged connection and movable one section relative to the other.

I will describe a knife embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view showing a knife embodying my invention and illustrating the method of opening the same. Fig. 2 shows the handle-sections as open. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, of a pivot-bearing employed for the blades.

The handle of the knife comprises two sections 1 2, and on one section are lugs 3, through which a pintle 4 passes, the said pintle also passing through a lug 5 on the section 2. Between the end of the lug 5 and one of the lugs 3 is a coiled spring 6, which serves to move the sections lengthwise one relatively to the other to cause a locking engagement of the parts. The section 1 has a lug 7 at one end for engaging in a keeper 8, formed in the other section, while said other section, 2, is provided with a lug 9 for engaging in a keeper or recess 10, formed in the section 1. These lugs are curved on the under side, so that when the sections are pressed together they will be moved longitudinally until the lugs are forced into the keepers by the action of the spring 4.

The handle-section 1 is provided with a recess 11 at its inner side, in which a blade 12 is pivoted, while the section 2 of the handle is provided with a recess 13, in which a blade 14 is pivoted. The pivots for the blades extend transversely of the blades, so that the said blades may fold flatwise into the handle-sections. The recesses 11 and 13open'outward, the opening of one recess being opposite to that of the other recess, so that the blades swing in opposite directions.

To open the knife, the two sections of the handle are to be drawn apartthat is, lengthwise one of the other, as indicated in Fig. 1 and then the sections may be swung on the pintle, and obviously after being opened either one or both of the blades may be swung outward and will be rigidly held in position when the handle-sections are closed.

It will be noted that the pivots for the blades consist of outwardly-extended lugs 15, which are engaged on the outer side by blocks 16, secured by means of pins in the handle-sections. It will also be noted that each blade near its pivoted end is provided with a curved shoulder 17, with which a persons thumbnail may be engaged when opening the blade.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent- 1. In a knife, a handle comprising two hinged members having lengthwise-sliding relation while both members remain in parallelism.

2. In a knife, a handle comprising two hinged members, a spring for causing the relative lengthwise movement of the members, and means for locking the members in closed position.

3. In a knife, a handle comprising two hinged members, a spring for causing a relative lengthwise movement between the members, locking-lugs on the members for engaging in keepers or recesses in the members, and blades pivotally arranged in the members of the handle.

4. A knife comprising a handle consisting of two hinged members provided With rel cesses, blades pivoted in the members, and blocks engaging with the pivots of the blades, the said blocks being secured in the handle members.

5. In a knife, a handle comprisingtwo hinged members provided With recesses at the inner side, blades pivoted in said recesses, the pivots being extended widthwise of the blades, and means for locking the handle memr bers together.
