Be it known that I, EMIL ALTMAN, a' citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county. and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inMufflers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to garments such as are used to protect the chest, neck, and ears of persons against cold.

The object of my invention is to provide a mufler which will be're'adily put on and which will be yprovided with ear-protectors adapted to-be concealed from view when they are not in use. y.

The invention will be fully described hereinafter and theV features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates the use of one form of my improved mufller. Fig. 2 shows the same spread out. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 illustrates the use of another form of my muffler.

Referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and, Aindicates that portion of the muffler which forms a chest-protector. This portion, as well as the remainder of the muiier, is preferably made of knitted goods, although I do not restrictmyself to this particular fabric. To the upper portion of the chest-protectorA is'connected a collar portion B, adapted to surround the persons neck. 4The ends of this collar,which preferably project beyond the side edges of the chest-protector A, are provided with any suitable fasteners B for securing them to each other. With the muffier so far as described, and preferably with the collar portion B, are connected ear-protectors C, Which I prefer to pivot to the collar portion B, as indicated at C.. The pivotal connection may be effected through the medium of a fastenerof the character of a glovefastener and is preferably arranged at about the point where the collar portion B joins the chest-protector A. 'This construction is of especial advantage when the chest-protector A is made with a single layer It will be understood that when the ear-protectors are within the respective pockets or straps they will be held in their concealed positionV and the muffler will form only a chest and neck protector. j

The form of construction shown in Fig. 4 differs from that described above in the detail construction of the earfprotectors. In this case the ear-protectors G3 are made of vsufficient lengthto extend over the head of the wearer and to be there connected with each other. While the connection of the two earprotectors may be permanent, I prefer to makeit detachable, as bythe use of fasteners C4, so that each of the ear-protectors may be folded separately into the corresponding pocket or under the respective straps of the chest-protector.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A mufller comprising a chest-protector, a collar portion located at the upper end of the chest-protector and projecting therefrom beyond the side' edges of the said protector, and ear-protectors pivotally connected with the collar portion by detachable fasteners of the glove-fastener character at points adjacent to the junction of theJ collar portion with the chest-protector.
