' METAL PLAQUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,170, dated February 21, 1905.
Application flied February 3, 1904. Serial No. 191,851.
well-known type of plate and to decorate the same by reproducing thereon famous or artistic designs, thereby securing at slight cost plaques that are ornamental, instructive, or attractive for advertising purposes.
A further object is to construct and combine the elements forming the plaque so that they will stiffen and strengthen each other and provide a rigid and practically non-bendable structure as a whole.
In the drawings forming a part of this ap-V plication, Figure 1 is a face View of a plaque constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 isan edge View, and Fig. 4 is a sectional' View through the plaque.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. v
The plaque is constructed of two separate sheet-metal dislzs-a facing-plate 5 and a backing-plate 6. The facing-plate has an intermediate dished portion 7, that is slightly concavo-convex and is surrounded by a marginal flange 8, inclining upwardly from the dished portion to the periphery. The marginal flange 8 is provided with a peripheral underturned bead 9, extending completely about the same. It will be observed that there are nosharp corners or angles formed in the facingplate, but that the outer surface thereof is carefully curved and corresponds to the upper face of an ordinary plate. The backing-plate 6 is also provided with a dished portion 10, which is slightly concavoconvex and of sufficient size to receive the dished portion 7 of the facing-plate. The central portions of these two plates have substantially the same curvature and are abutted, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The baclingplate is also provided with a marginal annular ange 11, which liange corresponds to the flange 8 in that it is upwardly inclined from the central dished portion. The peripheral edge of this marginal fiange is received within and inclosed by the bead 9 of the facing-plate, thus securing the two elements together. The configurations of the two plates are, however, different, for while the fianges and dished portions are substantially the same the backing-plate is provided at the junction thereof with an annular outstanding rib 12, pressed from the metal and constituting the support for the plaque, corresponding to the usual rib upon the under side of an ordinary plate.
The exposed face of the facing-plate 5 is ornamentally decorated by lithography or other suitable processes in imitation of famous designs in china or other artistic productions. This decoration in the present case extends to the very edge of the facing-plate, or, in other words, about the peripheral bead 9. The backing-plate is practically covered with a white coating in imitation of china, and the effect is greatly heightened by the ornamental bead adjacent to this white backing when the plate is viewed from one edge. Thus it will be seen that a plaque in imitation of fine china can be easily and cheaply produced from sheet metal, the ordinary configurations being obtained by separate sheets or disks. At the same time these sheets or disks wherever possible are brought into contact, so that they strengthen each other and a substantially nonbendable device as a whole is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, an ornamental plaque comprising a continuous unbroken facing -plate having an inwardlydished central portion and an inclined surrounding marginal ange, a backing-plate covering the rear of the facing-plate and having an inclined marginal flange secured to thel liange of the facing-plate, said backing-plate being inwardly dished to receive the dished IOO portion of the facing-plate and having a rearwardly-projecting supporting-rib, and ornamentation located on the exposed face of the facing-plate.
2. As an article of manufacture, Ya plaque comprising a continuous unbroken facingplate having a dished central portion and a surrounding marginal ange,a backingplate irrelnovably secured to the facing-plate and covering the rear face thereof, said backing-plate being dished to receive the dished portion of the facing-plate and also having a surrounding marginal flange, and an loutwardly-pressed supporting-rib formed in the backing-plate at the juncture of the dished and marginal portions thereof.
3. As -an article of manufacture, a plaque comprisinga metallic disk facing-plate having an in wardly-dished central portion and a surrounding annular inclined marginal iiange, said flange being provided with a peripheral underturned bead, and a metallic disk backing-plate having its edge inclosed within and secured by the bead of the facing-plate, said backing-plate covering the rear face of the facing-plate and being inwardly dished to receive the dished portion thereof, the backingplate furthermore having a surrounding inclined marginal flange, and an outwardlypressed supporting-rib formed in the backingplate at the juncture of the dished and marginal portions and located at the conjunction of the flange* and dished portion of the facingplate.
4. As an article of manufacture, an ornamental plaque comprising a continuous unbroken facing plate having an inwardlydished central portion and a surrounding marginal liange, a backing plate covering the rear of the facing-plate and having a marginal iange secured to the flange of the facing-plate, said backing-plate being' dished to receive the dished portion of the facing-plate and having a rearwardly-extending' annular rib at the juncture of the flange and dished portion, and ornamentation located on the exposed face of the facing-plate.
5. As an article of manufacture, an ornamental plaque, comprising a sheet-metal inwardly-dished facing-plate, a sheet-metal inwardly-dished backing-plate having its `margins secured to the margins of the facingplate, the dished portions of said plates being abutted and the parts between the abutted portions and the margins having different cross-sectional configurations, and ornamentation covering the outer face of the facingplate.
6. As an article of manufacture.I a plaque com prising a continuous unbroken sheet-metal disk facing-plate having a concavo-convex central portion and an inclined marginal flange provided with an underturned peripheral bead, and a continuous unbroken backingplate having an annular marginal flange, the periphery of which is inclosed by the bead of the facing-plate, said backing-plate having a centrally-disposed concavo-convex portion abutted against the corresponding portion of the facing-plate, and an outwardly-pressed circular bead located at the junction of the concavo-convex portion and the marginal iiange, said bead projecting beyond the concavo-convex portion.
7. An ornamental plaque comprising a sheetmetal backing-plate having a central dished portion, a marginal flange and an intermediate outstanding rib in combination witha facing-plate having a dished central portion received Within the corresponding portion of the backing-plate, a marginal flange fitting over the flange of the backing-plate, an annular bead inclosing the edge of the backingplate, and ornamentation arranged on the exposed face of the facing-plate and extending about the bead to the edge thereof.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in thepresence of two witnesses.
