ELIJAH HOLMES, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 78,373, dated flfay 26, 1868.
IMPROVED VEGETABLE AND FRUIT-SLIGER.
Q'tlge gtl fthltlt nfemt ta in that glitters ailment nut making part nt 1112 same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ELIJAII HOLMES, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Slicing-Machines for the cutting and slicing of fruit, vegetables, and other similar materials; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a perspective view of.the machine complete.
Figure 2, a portion of the disk or wheel with one of the knives and connected parts.
Figure 3 shows the manner of clamping the spindle O for the coarser adjustment; and
Figure 4 gives the structure of the knife and its bar, as seen in profile.
I construct my machine by mounting upon the frame A A the disk or wheel B B by means 0f=tl1espindle O and the clamping-box D. Upon the spindle C the hollow axis or socket, E, .of the wheel is 'placed and secured by the washer and screw a, so as to admit of free rotation while the spindle is itself tightly clamped.
Alongthree or more radii of the wheel B B, I cut wide openings, and in these I place the bars FFF, turning on pivots, with their outer ends supported by the ears or boxes Gr G Gr, screwed upon the periphery of the wheel for that purpose. These bars are thick on the back, but thinner on the forward edge, and on, the face or flat side of each is firmly riveted one of the slieing-blades'or knives H H II.
By this construction, the edge of the knife will, when the bar on which i tris fastened is turned, approach moreor less nearly to the face of the wheel, as it is presented at the gauge side of the opening at b b b, and thus secure a greater or lesser thickness in the slice of material cut away. This mode of adjustment also gives entire uniformity in thickness from one end of the bladeto the other. The pivots at. the inner ends of the bars F F I are receivedinto holes in the thickness of the wheel itself.
For the purpose of producing and graduating the rotary movement of the, bars FF F, I prolong the inner end of each into a crooked arm, I I I, terminating in a tooth, c c e. Thescteeth or terminal points are pressed upon by the broad flange of the nut J, which traverses upon, a. screw out upon the hollow axis E. Each tooth or arm is also pressed upward against this nut by a. spring, (Z d d, fastened on the back of the wheel.
13y this arrangement, the nut J, on being turned, depresses or releases the arms I I I, and thus produces a. simultaneous and uniform alteration of all three {or more) knives, so that all are at once adjusted and in exactly the same manner and degree.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to-secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the knife II, the bar F, the arm I, the nut J, and the spring (I, or their mechanical equivalents.
2. The combination of the several parts, as above describd, so that several knives shall be controlled and adjusted by a single screw or nut, for the purposes and in the manner substantially as above set forth.
ELIJAH HOLMES.
