SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 190,791,855, dated J une 6, 1905. Application ilerl February 13, 1904. Renewed April 3, 1905. Serial No. 253,604.
To (1j/ZZ whom, it may concern:
- Be it known that I, JULIUs A. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of JeEe-rson and State of Arkansas, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Umbrella-Supports, of. which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to umbrella-supports, and has for its object to provide a device of the character referred to which is adapted to embrace and be strapped upon the body of a person and to support an umbrella either in an upright position or at any angle to the vertical, whereby the arms of the person are ,tening the swivel-post.
left unconiined and free and the movement of the body not interfered with in the least.
The umbrella-su pport hereinafter described is especially adapted for drivers and horseback and bicycle riders and will be found useful to any person to whom it is important to have free use of the arms and hands while desiring to be protected in hot or inclement weather.
With the above general objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated, 4and claimed. l e
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the umbrella-support shown fitted upon a person. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of thesame. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the support. YFig. 4 is a detail section showing the manner of adjusting the lmovable parts of the support; and Fig. 5 is a detail section, taken at right angles to. Fig. 4, illustrati-ng the manner of adjusting and fas- Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the extra cover for the umbrella, showing the fastening devices attached thereto.
Like' reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs. Y
The umbrella-holder contemplated in this invention comprises, essentially, a frame or harness adapted to embrace and be fastened upon the body of the wearer. Under the preferred embodiment of this invention I employ a yoke 1, which is composed, by preference, of substantially parallel members 2, each `composed of spring metal. The members 2 are bent into substantially U shape, so as to vpass over one of the shoulders of the wearer,
the pendent extremities thereof, being connected by cross-pieces 3, to which they are riveted or otherwise secured. The yoke referred to is held in place upon the body by lmeans of a belt orwaistband 4, which is fastened to the yoke members 2, as shown at 5,
said belt being'v provided with an adjustingbuckle 6. The yoke is further fastened in place and braced by means of a strap 7, one end of which is secured at 8 to the uppermost portion of the yoke, while the other end is secured at 9 to that portion of the yoke lying against the back of the user. The breaststrap is also provided with an adjusting-buckle 10. Bythe means described the yoke is firmly fastened in place on the body While allowing free movement thereof.
Secured to the upper rear portion of the yoke is an angle-bracket 11, and to the upper horizontal portion of said bracket is firmly secured a socket-piece 12, provided with a flat base 13, attached rmly to the upper portion of the bracket 11. Mounted Within the the same being held and adjusted by means of a binding-screw 15. At a suitable point the swivel-post is provided with a pin 16,extend ing transversely thereof, the projecting end of said pin being adapted to be received in diametrically opposite notches 17, formed in the upper edge of the socket-piece 12, so that by'slightly raising the swivel-post the pin 16 may be engaged with any of the notches 17 for the purpose of holding the swivel-post in any position to which it may be turned.
The post 14 is provided at its upper end with a head 18, to which is pivotally connected by means of thehorizontal pivot 19 an umbrella-holder 20, which isof tubular construction and adapted to receive a staff 21 of the umbrella 22, the staff being fastened in place by means of a set-screw 23. The umbrella-V holder 20 extends below thepivot 19, Where it is provided with a slotted segment 24, through socket-piece 12 is a tubular swivel-post 14,
which passes a clamping-screw 25, which is received in an internally-threaded boss 26, projecting laterally from the swivel-post 14.
By loosening the clamping-screw 25 the umbrella-holder may be swung on the pivot 19, so as to cantor tilt the umbrella to any desired angle to the vertical, and it may beheld at the desired angle by tightening the clamping-screw 25. By loosening the binding-screw 15 the swivel-post may be raised and then turned axially, so that the umbrella will incline to either side or to the front or to the rear, as may be found necessary, according to the direction in which the rain is driving or at which the sun is shining. By tightening the binding-screw l5 the swivel-post is held in its adjusted position. It will thus be seen that the umbrella-support is adjustable to the person and adapted to be worn by persons of different size, also that the umbrella may be adjusted or inclined at any angle, so as to afford the necessary protection to the wearer. The device as a whole may be Worn u poneither shoulder, will leave the arms and hands free, and will not interfere with the movement of the body.
An extra cover 27, of opaque or heavy material, may be placed over the ordinary cover of the umbrella, as shown in Fig. 1, and fastened by means of hooks or eyes 28 to give a denser shade in hot weather and more edectively protect the driver. This extra cover may also be used to display advertising matter.
Having thus described the invention, Iclaim as new` 1. An umbrella-support comprising a yoke, means for securing the yoke upon the body, a bracket attached to said yoke, a socket-piece extending upward from the bracket and provided with notches, a swivel-post mounted in said socket-piece and having a pin or projection to engage said notches, an umbrellaholder pivotally connected with said post, and means for adjusting the angle of the holder relatively to the post.
2. An umbrella-support comprising a yoke, means for securing the yoke to the body, a bracket attached to said yoke, a socket-piece extending upward from the yoke, and provided with notches in its upper edge, a swivelpost mounted in said socket-piece and having a pin or projection for engaging the notches, a binding-screw for fastening the swivel-post in the socket-piece, an umbrella-holder pivotally connected intermediate its ends to the head of the swivel-post and provided with a slotted segment, and a clamp-screw passing through said segment and engaging the swivelpost, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
