PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. GORMAN, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY ISAACS, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
- PIE-PLATE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 793,653, dated July 4, 1905.
Application filed July 26, 1904:. Serial No. 218,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GroRuAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pie-Plate Attachments. of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to guards for the rims of pie-plates; and it has for its object the provision of improvements whereby the edge of the crust may be supported when the guard or rim is removed. also in improvements in means for connecting the guard-rim with the edge of the plate, and also improvements in means for latching and unlatching the ends of the guard-rim.
The aforesaid improvements will be set out clearly in the following description in view of the annexed drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the invention complete, showing it as attached to a pie-plate. Fig. 2 isasectional view through one edge in the plane a; m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of a small portion, showing the edges of the guard-rim latched together.
In the drawings, A designates the plate, and B the guard-rim. The plate may be of any suitable size and depth, and the rim a thereof may be of any shape that will allow of the guard B to be attached thereto. In the present instance the rim (0 of the plate is shown as plain and of substantially horizontal form. The guard B is made from a strip of metal of vertical form and corrugated, as shown. The bottom of the guard is provided with a fairly deep groove t, fitting the edge of the plate and allowing the corrugated part of the guard to extend over on the edge of the plate. The guard is made in two parts, two of the divided ends being hinged together, as at c, and the other two ends being provided with a latch (Z, consisting of a strip of metal suitably pivoted or otherwise connected with one of the outer bends of the corrugations near one of the divided ends, as at 6, so that when the ends are brought together around the edge of the pie-plate a small hole f in the said latch may be sprung over a pin g, extending out from one of the corrugations in the adjacent divided end of the guard.
The groove I) provides a substantial means for attaching the guard to the plate and serves to bring the corrugations of the guard well in from the edge, so that the edge of the piecrust when the guard is removed will be, as it were, provided with numerous supportingpillars built upon the edge of the plate, so that the crust will not break down. The crust beneath the pillars will be that part that lies on the edge of the plate and the pillars will be supported thereby, and the crust for this reason will not break down even when the pie is carelessly cut. This is not the case where the guard is made straight without pillars or where the pillars would have no crust beneath to support them.
It is to be noted that in my pie-plate attachment the base is horizontal to insure the formation of a substantially horizontal crust as a support beneath the pillars and in order that the full benefit of forming the vertical pillars, as hereinbefore stated, may be accomplished.
I claim The combination, with a pie-plate having a flat edge or rim of a vertically-corrugated rim or guard, provided with an annular groove on its lower edge, to fit on the edge of the pieplate in such manner that the corrugations shall extend over the plate, the flat rim forming the bottom of the corrugations, the guard being adapted to be latched in position on the plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS J. GOBMAN.
