UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed April 9, 1904. Serial No. 202,433.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN ELSWORTH BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maroa, in the county of Macon, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Plug-Tobacco; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes for plug-tobacco; and it has for its object to provide a box from which the tobacco may be readily removed. As is well understood, the tobaccothat is, chewingtobaccois packed in a box in layers, each of the layers consisting of a number of plugs, the inner face of the box being ordinarily smooth and the tobacco being packed tight in the box, so that it sticks to the sides of the box and it is rather difficult to remove the first plug of each layer without injuring the plug.
In the use of a box embodying the present invention any plug of the exposed layer may be readily removed without injury to the same.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of referenceindicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a box embodying the present invention, a part of the contents of the box being removed. Fig.
2 is a section through the box longitudinally of a pair of grooves at opposite ends of a plug.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a box comprising sides 5 and 6, ends 7 and 8, a bottom 9, and a top 10.
The upper and lower edges of the sides 5 and 6 of the box are rabbeted, as shown at 11, and in these rabbets are received the bottom and top 9 and 10, respectively, so that the bottom and top are flush with the adjacent edges of the ends and with the portions of the sides of maximum height. The portions of the sides 5 and 6 between the rabbets have grooves 12 and 13, respectively, formed in their inner faces and extending throughout the heights thereof, the grooves 12 lying directly opposite to the grooves 13, so that each pair of grooves 12 and 13 will be at the opposite ends of a plug of tobacco, (illustrated at 14.) When itis desired to remove a plug of tobacco, the finger may be passed through either groove beyond the end of the plug'and the end of the plug readily drawn outwardly. By continuing these grooves from the bottom to the top of the box any plug of any exposed layer may be readily removed.
What is claimed is A box for plug-tobacco comprising a top, a bottom, and sides, the upper and lower portions of two of the sides being rabbeted to receive the top and bottom flush with the top and bottom edges of the said two sides, and the portion of the sides between the rabbets being grooved and adapted to receive the finger.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN ELSWORTH BOWMAN.
