Specification of Letters Patent.
:Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed October l. 1904. Serial No. 226,875.
ile it known that l, Hanni S. Sonierrrz, a citizen of the United States, residingl at East tilreenville, in the county of Montgomery and tltate of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in irland Tire-Cutters, of which the Yfollowing is a specification.
l his invention relates to knives or wire-cutters such as are adapted to be secured to the hand of the operator.
rlhe objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such devices.
lWith the foregoing and other minor objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention residesin the precise combination and arrangement of parts and in the exact details of construction hereinafter described and claimed as a practical embodiment of the invention.
,ln the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a knife constructed in accordance with the invention, said knife being indicated in position upon the rear edge of the operatives hand, Eig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Eig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Like reference-numerals indicate correspending parts in the different views.
'.lhe improved knife comprises a blade l, which preferably is sharpened at its outer end, as indicated by the reference-mimeral 2. lhe blade lA is secured to the rear edge of the eperatives hand by improved means, which comprise, preferably, a stirrup 3, which is bent intermediate its ends to form a slot il, in which is seated the rear end of the blade 1, said stirrup being secured upon the blade by means of a rivet or the like 5. Straps t5 are secured to the outer ends of the stirrup 3, said straps being adapted to be secured to each other `by means of a suitable buckle 7. '.lhe stirrup 3 is adapted te embrace the wrist of the operative and to be held securely there on by means of the straps 6. lln order to avoid chaling of the wrist of the operative, the stirrup 3 is padded in any suitable manner, as indicated by i5, said padding consisting, preferably, of a ribbon or strip of flannel wrapped spil-ally around the stirrup.
llhe outer end of the blade l is secured in position by means of a stirrup 9, which is formed, preferably, in two pieces clamped to opposite sides of the blade by means of a rivet, such as l0. The outer ends of the stirrup 9 are joined by a strap l1, which is secured permanently to the ends of said stirru p and is formed, preferably, of elastic material. The stirrup 9 is adapted to embrace the third and fourth iingers and to be held against displacement therefrom by means of the elastic strap ll.
In securing the improved knife in position upon the rear edge of the operatives hand the third and vfourth lingers are inserted through the stirrup 9 and the straps 6 are tightened around the wrist, thus elfectually preventing the disengagement of the knife from the hand.
llhe improved knife of this invention is cffective in severing' binders, and by reason of the fact that it is fastened along the rear edge of the hand it does not interfere seriously with the free movement thereof.
ln its particular combination and arrallge ment of parts and in its exact details of oonstruction the knife of this invention consti tutes an improvement over prior devices intended for a similar purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is ./li knife havingl a metallic stirrup member adapted to embrace the third and fourth iingers of the hand, said stirrup member being formed in two pieces riveted to opposite sides of the knife, an elastic strap secured to and connecting the ends of said stirrup member, a metallic stirrup member of approximate-ly semicircular shape having a slot formed by bending the stirrup member intermediate its ends, said knife being fitted into the slot of said last-mentioned stirrup member, and said stirrup member being adapted to embrace the wrist of the hand, straps secured to the ends of said lastmentioned stirrup member, a buckle for fastening the straps, and padding upon each of said stirrup members.
Al n testimony whereof 1 allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
