To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. DANIEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Injecting-Needles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in injecting-needles, and particularly to a needle of this character designed especially for injecting a preservative salt solution into meats to prevent decay or souring of the same along the bones or at the joints where decay usually begins.
The object of the invention is to provide a needle which is so constructed as to prevent stoppage ofthe outlet or outlets by the meat when the needle is introduced therein, thereby insuring the free injection of the preservative fluid, and which is also provided with means to retain the fluid in the meat and prevent it from escaping and flowing back along the outside of the needle.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation ofthe improved needle, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the barrel ofthe needle, which is provided with a longitudinal bore or passage 2, opening through the rear end of the barrel, the barrel being provided at said end with a ribbed or threaded enlargement 3 to adapt it for attachment to any ordinary syringe. The bore or passage 2 is closed at the front end of the barrel by an integral portion 4, which is shaped to form an introducing-point. Adj acent to the point ithe barrel is provided with one or more lateral or side outlet-passages 5,
' through which the preservative fluid discharges from the passage 2 into the meat to be preserved. By forming the discharge outlet or outlets in the side of the barrel the closure or stoppage of said outlet or outlets by the meat when the needle is introduced therein is prevented, thus overcoming the known objection to needles of that kind in which the outlet extends throu h the point end, so that a free discharge of t e preservative solution and its perfect distribution is insured. Immediately in rear of the outlet or outlets 5 thev barrel is provided with an annular boss or enlargement 6, preferably having tapered or beveled front and rear ends 7 and 8. This enlargement may be integral with the needle, or it may be formed of a hub or sleeve suitably secured thereon.l It serves to form a convenient grip or handpiece by which the instrument may be conveniently inserted and withdrawn, and also as a stopper or closure for the opening or passage in the meat formed by the point and outlet end of the barrel, the beveled Vportion 7 closing such passage and preventing the introduced fluid from escaping and iiowing back upon the outside of the needle, so that all of the fluid injected will be retained for preservative purposes.
By the use of this invention a salt solution or preservative fluid may be readily, quickly, and conveniently injected into a portion of meat along the bone or at the joint to prevent souring or decay at these points, where it ordinarily begins, and the construction of the instrument is such as to secure the free introduction of the fluid and the retention of the whole, or a greater portion thereof, in the meat to be preserved.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- A needle for injecting a preservative salt solution into meats, the same comprising a barrel having an introducing-point closing the outer end of the bore thereof, said barrel being provided adjacent to said point with one or more lateral outlets, and an enlargement upon the barrel immediately adjoining said outlets, said enlargement having a beveled end located in close contiguity to the rear ends of the outlets to enter the opening or passage in the meat formed by the point and outlet end of the barrel, whereby said enlargement is adapted to serve the oombined function of a finger-grip and a stopper to close the opening in the meat to prevent the escape of the injected solution, substantially as described.
