'To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Dressers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of devices known as window-dressers or window-reachers, and the present invention relates more particularly to a simply-constructed device of the character hereinafter more fully set forth, comprising a pair of readily-manipulated and frictionless grips or jaws which are actuated by means of a long shank arranged in a tubular handle and rod for automatically retaining their grip upon the smallest and fiimsiest article, such as a lace handkerchief and the like, a lever which is connected, with the handle so as to be grasped in the hand with the handle being used to actuate the long shank and the jaws, and a spring or other suitable means being employed to return the various parts to their normal initial positions as soon as the pressure is removed from the lever.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly evident from the following detailed description of my present invention.
The invention consists, primarily, in the novel window-dresser or window-reacher hereinafter set forth, and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrange ments and combination of parts, as well 'as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth and then finally embodied in vthe clauses of the claim, which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the window-dresser, partly in elevation and partly in section, the movable parts of the device being shown in their normal initial positions; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the grips or jaws and a sectional representation of the upper framework and the tubular rod in which said grips or jaws are operatively arranged. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow X; and Fig. 4 is a similar section taken on line 4 4-in said Fig. 1, also looking in the direction of the arrow X. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale, said section being represented as being taken on line 5 5 in Fig. 2 of the drawings; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the long actuating-rod and its means for actuating the grips or aws.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referrin now to the several figures of the drawings, t 1e reference character 1 indicates the complete implement. 2 is a suitable handle, and 8 a tubular rod extending from one end and preferably from within a tubular portion 4 of said handle, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The lower portion of the said handleis provided withalaterallyextending slot or opening 5 and with a tubular portion 6, in which is arranged a tube-like device or member 7, having its lower screwthreaded end portion 8 extending beyond the lower end of the said handle, a socketed nut or cap 9 being screwed upon said end portion 8 and against the end of the handle, as shown. A finger 10 on said member 7 ex tends through the said slot or opening 5, said finger being provided with a bifurcated end portion 11 and a pivotal pin 12. Directly beneath the said finger the said member 7 is also made with an opening or slot 13. Pivotally arranged upon the said pin or pivot 12, so as to be movably connected with the said finger 10, is an actuating-lever 14, said lever being provided with an extension 15, which extends into and through the said slots 5 and 13 and has a bifurcated end portion 16, embracing the lower and screw-threaded part 18 of a long shank 17 and resting in engagement upon a nut 19, adj ustably secured upon said screw-threaded part 18. Encircling that portion of the screw-threaded part 18 below the nut 19 and extending from the lower tubular end portion of the tubular member 7 into the socket of the said nut or cap 9 is a coiled spring 20. Suitably secured upon opposite sides of the upper portion of the said tubular rod 3, preferably by being brazed thereto, are the end members 22 of a pair of supporting frames or plates 21. The said plates 21 .are each made with an outwardlybent central portion 23, as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings. The said plates 21 are suitably secured together by means of pins or rivets 24, and that there may be a space between said plates a perforated disk or washer 25 is arranged upon each pin or rivet 24, as shown.
The previously-mentioned long shank 17, which receives a downward movement witliin the tubular rod 3 and said member 7 when the lever 14 is pressed toward the side of the handle 2, has its upper end extending from the upper part of said tube 3 and between the said plates 21, a pair of preferably T-shaped members 26 being secured on opposite sides of said shank, substantially as shown. The oppositely extending portions 27 of said members 26 are united by means of pins or rivets 28 upon each of which is rotatively arranged a roller 29. Other connecting pins or rivets 30 are arranged at the respective ends of said plates 21, an antifriction-roller31 being arranged upon each pin or rivet 30 between the said plates 21. Pivotally arranged upon each roller 31 is a bell-crank comprising a pair of butts or arms 32 and 33, one of which, as 32, is provided with a grip or grasping-j aw 34, and the other butt or arm 33 being made with a slotted or bifurcated end portion 35, operatively fitted over aroller 29 upon the pin or rivet 28. These various parts are all of them operatively connected in a manner substantially as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings, and their operation, briefly, is as follows: When the han dle 2 is grasped in the hand and the lever 14 is forced in a direction toward said handle, a downward movement of the finger 15 forces the long shank 17 downwardly within the tubular rod 3 and member 7 ,whereby the spring 20 becomes depressed. At the same time the downwardmovement of the device 26 and the rollers 29 produce a pivotal action of the two bell-cranks toward each other, thereby causing their grips or grasping-jaws 34 to tightly grasp an article placed between them and to be carried between said closed jaws from place to place for the purpose of dressing a store-window or for reaching an article from a shelf or for placing such article upon the shelf or other desired place. As soon as the article has been placed the operator releases the lever 14 by removing the pressure therefrom, which permits the coils of the compressed spring 20 to assume their normal relation,'thereby causing the movable parts of the implement to once more assume their normal initial positions at rest, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description of my invention it will be clearly seen that I have devised an e'lficient device which is especially adapted to dressing show-windows, the implement being admirably adapted to enable an operator to change the arrangement of the goods at will and to place articles in the most inaccessible parts without the use of a ladder or the like. The device may also be used for removing articles from lofty shelves, ceilings, and other points which cannot ordinarily be reached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a window-dresser, a tubular shank and handle, a tubular member in said tubular handle, said member and handle having registering openings, a finger on said member, said finger extending through said openings, a rod movably arranged in said tubular shank and tubular member, a pair of normally open jaws connected with said rod, and a lever pivotally connected with said finger for actuating said rod and'producing a downward movement of said rod, to close said jaws upon an article, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a windowdresser, a tubular shank and handle, a tubular member in said tubular handle, said member and handle having registerin openings, a finger on said member, said 'nger extending through said openings, a rod movably arranged in said tubular shank and tubular member, a pair of normally open aws connected with said rod, and a lever pivotally connected with said finger for actuating said rod and producing a downward movement of said rod, to close said jaws upon an article, and a spring for returning said rod upwardly and separating said jaws when said rod-actuating means is released, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a window-dresser, a reciprocatin rod, a pair of plates at the upper end of said rod, said plates being formed with a space between them, and oscillatorybell-cranks provided with grasping-jaws at one end and slotted portions at the other ends extending between said plates, and means between said plates in en agement with said slotted portions of the bell-cranks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a window-dresser, a reciprocatory rod, a pair of plates at the upper end of said rod, said plates being formed with a space between them, and oscillatory bell-cranks pro- ICC vided with grasping-j aws at one end, and slotted portions at the other ends extending between said plates, and rollers arranged between said plates in engagement with said slotted portions of said bell-cranks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a window-dresser, a tubular shank, a grip-carrying frame upon said shank, comprising a pair of plates having a space beranged between said plates in engagement.

In a window-dresser, a tubular shank, a grip-carrying frame upon said shank, comprising a pair of plates having a space between them, bellcranks pivoted between said plates, said bell-cranks being provided with grasping-jaws at one end and slotted portions at the other ends, a reciprocatory rod in said tubular shank, a pair of plates at the upper end of said rod, said plates being formed with a space between them, and rollers arwith said slotted portions of said bell-cranks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. In a window-dresser, a tubular shank, a grip-carrying frame upon said shank, comprising a pair of plates having a space between them, antifriction-rollers between said plates, bell-cranks pivoted on said rollers, said bell-cranks being provided with graspingjaws at one end and slotted portions at the other ends, a reciprocatory rod in said tubular shank, a pair of plates at the upper end of said rod, said plates being formed with a space between them, and rollers arranged between said plates in engagement with said. slotted portions of said bell-cranks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. The hereindescribed window-dresser, comprising a tubular shank and handle, a tubular member in'said tubular handle, said member and handle having registering openings, a finger on said member, said finger extending through said openings, a grip carrying frame uponsaid shank, comprising a pair of plates having a space between them, anti friction rollers between said plates, bellcranks pivoted on said rollers, said bellcranks being provided with grasping-jaws at one end and slotted portions at their other ends, a reciprocatory rod in said tubular shank and tubular member in said handle, a pair of plates at the upper end of said rod, said plates being formed with a space between them, rollers arranged between said plates in engagement with said slotted portions of said bell-cranks, and a lever pivotally connected with said finger for actuating said reciprocatory rod and producing a downward friction-rollers between said plates, bell-' cranks pivoted on said rollers, said bellcranks bein provided with grasping-jaws at one end and ends, a reciprocatory rod in said tubular shank and tubular member in said handle, a pair of plates at the upper end of said rod, said plates being formed with a space between them, rollers arranged between said plates in engagement with said slotted portions of said bell-cranks, and a lever pivotally connected with said finger for actuating said reciprocatory rod and producing a downward movement of said rod, to close the aws of the bell-cranks upon each other, and a spring for returning said rod upwardly and separating said jaws when said rod-actuating means is released, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
