IMPROVED AUTOMATIC CAR-COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to :In these Letters Patent andmaking part of the same.
Be it known that I, HORACE TA'RBOX, ofthe townV of Warwick, in the county of Kent, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement inta Self-Acting -Oar-Goupling; and I -dohereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and 4exact descriptionof the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings. making a part of this specification, in`which-f y Figure 1 is a perspective view of -an ordinary carcoupling, with my improvement attached.
. Figure 2 is a perspective view of the interior.
Figures 3 and 4are parts of same.
In the accompanying drawing,
A, iig. l, is a box, attached `or cast to a-common @car-coupling.
Inside of box vA'is a shaft, b, as represented on fig. 2. This shaft is secured n its place by set-screws,
be turned. v
A coil-spring, c, is fastened to one of its ends. d, gs. 2 and' 4, is a lever. One end is fastened to shaftb, the opposite end of which is fitted into a slot in the coupling-pin.
Fig; 3 represents the form of coupling-pin used by me. Itis provided with a stop or guide-plate, e, the lower edge of 4which holds the connecting-link dat; and in' position to connect two cars together, as shown on fig. 1.
f, figs. 2 and 4, is a piece of wire, bent the form of a staple, and arranged in slides, so one' end or short arm rests against the coupling-pin. 'The opposite end, or longerarm is carried' through the Vfront of box A, as shown in fig. 1 d, fig. 2, isa lever, made to press agzeu'nstv the bend i l 'l' of wire f, by means of a coil-spring connected -to its A lower end.
raised, as represented in fig. 4, causing the shaft b to' turn, and winding or straining-up springe.`
When `attached on a car,- the coupling-pin being set, and the two cars brought together, the connecting-link passes into the coupling, the longer arm of wire fis acted on and pressed into box A, drawing the end of shortV afm from the notch on guide-plate e, and the spring c acting on the lever d, drops the coupling-pin to its place, thus securing the two cars together. one at each end, holding it on centres, and so it can The advantages are, it can be set to couple or not, as desired, and it 'can be made to lit any coupling now in use, saving theexpense of Inakingan entire new coupling.
I do not claim a coupling as myinvention; but
What I do claim, and desire vto secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A car-coupling, composed of the box A, with a shaft, b, and spring c, -which has a lever,.d, connected to the slotted coupling-pin, with a guideplate, e, when combined with a projecting staple, f, and lever i, all con structedand operated substantially as described, and for the purpose speciiied.
