COMBINATION WRENCH AND CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed October 11, 1906. Serial No. 338,511.
T all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. RICH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination renches and Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combination wrench and can opener, and its primary object is to provide a simple, inexpensive and effective device for removing and applying caps and covers of jars, boxes and like packages.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the character indicated with a can opener attachment of novel construction.
The improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device applied to a jar cover, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation illustrating the operation of the can opener attachment, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the combination implement.
The improved wrench consists of a strip 1 of sheet metal formed with two oppositely disposed series of corrugations 2 and 3. The corrugated metal strip is bent to circular form to adapt it to embrace the cap 4 of a jar or other receptacle. The ends 5 and 6 of the circular portion of the wrench overlap thus adapting it to be adjusted to caps or covers of different sizes.
The end 6 of the metal strip is bent outward at a right angle and then bent again at a right angle to provide a projecting arm 7 terminating in'a blade 8 adapted to serve as a can opener.
Pivotally secured on oppositesides of the blade 8 are two angle plates 9 adapted to rest upon the top of a can 10 as illustrated in Fig. 3 to serve as fulcra for the blade 8 in opening a can.
The two rows of oppositely disposed corrugations permit the wrench to be reversed,
thus adapting it for use in applying caps or covers to jars or other receptacles as well as for removing the same.
The projecting arm of the device serves as a convenient hand or finger-rest when the wrench is to be used, and the circular wrench or body portion of the implement serves as a handle when the can opener is in use.
It will be apparent that the improved implement may be manufactured at small expense, and provides a useful and convenient household article.
I/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Awrench comprising a strip of metal, bent to circular form and having its ends overlapping and said strip being formed with oppositely disposed rows of corrugations.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. RICH. Witnesses:
